I’m sure most of you noticed the pink and purple flooding the Roto last week, or perhaps the immense amount of Greek letters surrounding you in the halls. That’s because last week was Formal Recruitment!

Formal Recruitment is a process in which interested Bryant University female students attend a series of events in the Bryant Center to determine whether or not Greek Life is the right fit for them. Starting on Thursday, the girls met the sisters of each chapter, Sigma Sigma Sigma and Delta Zeta at an ice cream social. Friday, each chapter chose a theme and informed the girls about everything it means to be a sister of their sorority. Saturday, the girls were given a chance to learn about the sororities’ philanthropy and take part in an actual philanthropy event. Sunday, they were invited back for a sacred ceremony with the sororities that personally connected with the potential new members. And lastly, on Monday, the girls received their bids (a certificate formally inviting them to join their chapter).

Formal Recruitment is a great way to get to know the members of the sorority you’re interested in. I know because I went through it myself just one year ago. Even better, this year I got to be on the other side of things and really build relationships with potential new members, all while searching for the qualities my chapter looks for in a member.

If you are interested in joining a sorority, but missed Formal Recruitment this year, you actually still have a chance to get involved in Greek Life! Another Formal Recruitment will be taking place at the end of February for our newest chapter on campus, Alpha Omicron Pi. The chapter will be working to establish a group of girls who embody AOPi’s mission and values to create a colony. During this special Formal Recruitment, advisors and excited alumni from AOPi will be available to welcome potential new members and tell them all about the opportunity. Following Formal Recruitment, chosen members will work to help found Bryant’s new AOPi chapter over the next year.

As a current member of a sorority, I strongly encourage all you Bryant ladies (no matter what year you’re in) to attend the AOPi Formal Recruitment. This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to not only be a member of a sorority, but also a FOUNDER!
