We’re only a month into the semester and I’m already sick of Market. Yes, I know there are other options, but let’s face it, they aren’t the greatest either. So that’s why I’m here to help, not only myself, but also you lovely ladies as well! I’m going to find the best (a.k.a. cheapest and quickest) recipes and try them out so that you can use them as well! Can’t cook? No problem, I can’t either (so if I can make these recipes, then I guarantee you can too). Only have a microwave and a mini fridge in your dorm? That’s not a problem either; I’ll make dorm-friendly meals!
So for the first meal, I figured I’d start off with something incredibly easy and almost impossible to mess up…tomato soup and grilled cheese. Yes, I know Market has grilled cheese every day, but they no longer have tomato soup every day like they used to. WHO EATS GRILLED CHEESE WITHOUT TOMATO SOUP? Definitely not me. Plus, I was looking around for dorm-friendly recipes to try and stumbled across grilled cheese made with an iron. Yes, I am talking about the thing you use to get wrinkles out of clothes.
I was obviously very skeptical of this as I’m sure you are too, so I searched around the internet and apparently making grilled cheese with an iron isn’t that unheard of. I even found a YouTube video about it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgPBQpkh60I)! There are only a few supplies you’ll need for the grilled cheese:
-2 slices of bread
-2 slices of preferred cheese (I like American)
-Butter
-Knife
-Aluminum foil
-Iron
-Towel
The sandwich is made exactly like a normal grilled cheese is made. Butter one side of each slice of bread and make a sandwich with the cheese, buttered sides facing out. Then take the aluminum foil and wrap up the sandwich so that it’s completely covered. Then lay out the towel so that you have a place to put your wrapped-up sandwich. Turn on the iron and put it on the highest setting. Once the iron is hot, just place it on top of the sandwich. Depending on the strength of your iron, it can take anywhere from 30 seconds to a few minutes. I left the iron on top of the sandwich for one minute and then flipped it over to cook the other side for a minute. If it’s your first time, you might want to check your sandwich about every 30 seconds so you know whether or not it’s cooked completely. Be careful when opening the foil because it will be warm still! If the cheese sticks to the foil, that’s okay!
The tomato soup is easy. Open a can of soup and pour it in a bowl. I like to put milk in my soup to make it creamier. If you choose to do this, refill the now empty soup can with milk and then pour it in with the soup. Stir it up so you don’t have a layer of milk on the top. After that, just microwave for 2 and a half minutes. Then, enjoy with your sandwich! :)
It only took a total of about ten minutes to make everything. I bought all of the ingredients from Giant Eagle Market District on Centre Avenue for less than ten dollars. They accept Panther funds there! Stay tuned for next week’s recipe: either chicken teriyaki or tacos (both completely microwaveable!!). You’ll just have to come back to Her Campus Pitt to find out which it is ;)
