Let’s be honest – Valentine’s Day can often feel like Singles Awareness Day if a significant other isn’t in the picture. Looking on the bright side, though, we’re all surrounded with people that we love and that love us – even if it’s not in a romantic sense. So, instead of sulking this holiday, treat yourself to some much-deserved fun.
Ice Skating
Taking advantage of the ice skating rink on campus is a great way to spend part of Valentine’s Day. Dress up in your warmest coat, cutest earmuffs, and warmest knit socks and head up to Norris. Ice-skating is a creative way to get active and a low-key opportunity to hang out with your crush. If you’re feeling adventurous, make your way into Chicago to skate at the beautiful Millennium Park rink.
Pamper yourself
Valentine’s Day is the perfect excuse to take time out of your day for a little R&R. Get a much-deserved manicure, shop as much as your feet will allow, or run to the salon for an impromptu blowout (we all love the way our hair feels after someone else styles it). Grab a few of your friends and give yourselves some Valentine’s Day presents. Besides, looking and feeling good may just be the extra push you need to talk to that special someone on your mind.
Go on a group date
Hop on Facebook and make a Valentine’s Day event for you and your friends – even your guy friends if you’re feeling like it. Invite all of your single pals and grab dinner at a nice restaurant. You all can bond over food and great conversation. Plus who doesn’t love dressing up and eating a meal out of the dining halls?
Make valentines
Remember those Valentines your mom bought you from Target that you passed out to half of your 4th grade class? You’d tape Tootsie Rolls to your Tweety Bird cards, write each classmate’s name on them and drop it in his or her lunch bag during class. It’s always fun to take a trip back down memory lane and no college student in his or her right mind would turn down free candy. Gather one or two friends and make valentines for all of your closest friends.
Go into the city
Throw on your hottest heels, cutest dress, warmest parka and head into the city for an evening. Despite the fact that you will be looking way too good to be in a cab or on the train, the city in the wintertime is an experience everyone should encounter. Window-shop on Michigan Avenue, eat dinner at a nice restaurant and be sure to take plenty of pictures.
Ask your crush out!
All right, most of these ideas count on the fact that you’re spending Valentine’s Day with your friends. However, if you’re courageous enough to ask out your crush, more power to you! Congratulations on taking charge and asking for what you want. So… doll yourself up, grab a bite to eat, do something exciting, and show your crush how amazing you are!
