Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week sets the tone for what will be the must-have looks for the next several months. This season was extra exceptional. Young designers like Prabal Gurung and Thakoon have received major buzz for their inventive designs. Now, more than ever, fresh, new designers are receiving more attention, making them the newest trendsetters in the fashion world. And trendset they do. Below are the top three trends for fall 2012, as declared by Fashion Week’s hottest designers.

1. Cobalt Blue: Be Bold with Prabal Gurung
The collection was presented, in both color and mood, from its darkest to lightest pieces. Minimal color was represented, though cobalt blue eye shadow and details remained prevalent. It is clear, this will be the stand out color for fall. This cobalt printed dress was one of my favorites in the collection because I loved the tailored dress mixed with a 60s-vibe psychedelic pattern. I think he nailed this collection; from the bold color to the even bolder print, fall 2012 is shaping up to be pretty fabulous.

2. Red Leather: Embrace Color with Thakoon
Thakoon apparently loved bright colors while designing this collection. Bold oranges, reds and magentas gave the line a very warm feel contrasting very much so to Gurung’s cool looks. One thing is for sure: color blocking has not left the fashion world yet. Mixing these two designers looks together will be very popular in the fall. Thakoon featured several pieces with red leather in ways other than your typical leather jacket. My favorite was this ruched waist and biceps red leather dress that I could totally see Emma Stone rocking.

3. 60s Mod Look: Get retro with Geoffrey Mac
I am a huge fan of the 60s retro look and couldn’t be more thrilled to see this all over Geoffrey Mac’s collection. Right now, polished looks with collars are all the rage, and I think it took a more girly form with all of Mac’s pieces. He used primary colors and color blocking creating a very Mondrian look reminiscent of Yves Saint Laurent in the 80s. I think this look will be very popular in the fall with oxfords and schoolgirl details like in the ultra fashion forward film, An Education.
