To some people, the beginning of February means the groundhog will determine how many more weeks are left of winter. To others, it’s the countdown until the Super Bowl. For students in the UVA Greek community, these first few weeks of the month mean so much more. Second to Foxfield, Boy’s Bid Night is the most anticipated event of the year for Rugby Road frequenters.
Starting around noon, fraternity brothers (in their preppiest and most polished attire) travel to dorms to give rushees their bids. The handing out of the bids is done in a very unique fashion- once the pledge is retrieved from his dorm he is thrown up in the air multiple times by all of his new brothers, an event that needs to be witnessed in person to truly appreciate.
All the fun really begins later that evening, when girls in matching neon sorority tanks decked out in vibrant hats, glitter, fanny packs, and sequins collectively venture to as many frats as possible. The chances of every single UVA fraternity throwing giant dance parties on any other night is slim to none, so girls take advantage of the open door “come one, come all” parties as the boys treat them like princesses to further impress the new pledges.
With Boy’s Bid Night now behind us, and as the stories of Bid Night casualties begin to wane (you sprained your ankle too?), the season of getting your frat boyfriends’ new pledge to do your laundry and bring you cupcakes at the library circa 3 a.m. is upon us again.
