We’ve all heard of beauty tips that seem too strange to be true. But, now beauty experts and doctors have explained these peculiar tips and the truth is out!
Tip #1: Mayonnaise is a great deep conditioner for your hair.
Consensus: True! The fat and oils in mayonnaise conditions damaged hair follicles by coating them with oil. Despite this, celebrity hairstylist and hair expert Rene Fris does not encourage this wacky treatment. Instead, she suggests a deep condition mask that is specifically formulated for hair.
Tip #2: Urine works as an astringent to clear up acne on your face.
Consensus: False! Dermatologist Neil Sadick says that urine does not have any antibacterial agents or anti-inflammatory agents.
Tip #3: Taking a warm bath in very strong black tea cures sunburn.
Consensus: True! Dr. Sadick says that it will definitely help alleviate any burning sensation. The tannins take away the sting and swelling. It draws the burn out of the skin and helps it heal!
Tip #4: Lemon juice naturally lightens hair.
Consensus: True! Putting lemon juice in your hair before going out in the sun will lighten your hair. Fris says that the acid reacts with the sun’s UV rays, which accelerates the highlighting process.
Tip #5: Toothpaste applied to a pimple overnight will get rid of it.
Consensus: True! Dr. Sadick says it’s true because it may have a drying effect on skin. But, it will only work with plan white toothpaste without gels. Also, it should only be used as a temporary spot treatment.
Tip #6: Using hot pepper sauce on your roots will help your hair grow.
Consensus: False! Hot pepper sauce has been used in at-home remedies for centuries. Fris says that to try the treatment, you will need to apply pepper sauce all over the scalp. People have tried this remedy but so far, no one has seen results. So keep that hot pepper sauce on your food, not your scalp!
Tip #7: Putting olive oil in your hair for 10 minutes before washing it will condition your hair as well as make it grow faster.
Consensus: True! Olive oil adds nutrients and healthy fats to the roots so it does help improve hair health. Using it as a deep conditioning treatment makes hair silkier. But, Fris says that olive oil doesn’t speed up the process of hair growth enough to make it a useful solution.
