As college students, we are so fortunate to have a multitude of resources at our fingertips. Fitness centers, food services, student health, and peaceful places to study are just the tip of the iceberg for us here on campus. However, we should never let our lives as student’s overshadow the fact that we are able to make a difference in the lives of others. It’s so important to find causes to be passionate about, especially in college, before the world of salaried jobs, bills, and other serious expenses kick in. In our community alone, there are so many outlets that accept volunteers and donations. From the big, well-known organizations like Habitat for Humanity or the animal shelter to local occurrences like the soon-to-be F.A.R.M. café in the King Street Boone Drug, there are countless places here in the High Country where we can make a difference. Being a successful college student isn’t just about getting good grades or getting involved on-campus, but also finding a place in your heart for your community and the town that sometimes feels like home.
Other than non-profits or organizations that aim to help specific causes, there are always individual families and people in our area that may find themselves in difficult situations. As students at ASU, we are the “tourists” to a lot of the native citizens here, and we always want to represent ourselves and our school in a positive way. Giving back to our area by supporting the cause of an individual or the clean-up of a street not only reflects you positively to others but gives you a motivation and a purpose that the freedom of college allows you the time and resources to experience. I know many of us are still clinging to our New Year’s resolutions of going to the gym more and eating healthier, but challenge yourself to add another resolution to give back to your community and make a positive change in Boone while you live here. Sometimes it takes pushing ourselves out of our comfort zones to volunteer for something we are uncomfortable and unfamiliar with, but the rewards will exceed adding another bullet point to your resume, trust me.
