Spring Break 2012: How to Make the Most of a Week Off

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lehigh chapter and does not reflect the views of Her Campus.

Although we love Lehigh, Spring Break comes at a much-needed time during second semester. We have been busy partying and studying basically nonstop since we got back in January, and some R&R is definitely in order. Whether you’re going home or going away, we have some tips for getting the most out of your vacation.

Get some rest

For those of us who participated in second semester recruitment, these last few weeks have been fun, but busy. Pressure to go out more often, participate in every event, and volunteer for every job or task has us running around with very little spare time. We love this new life, but need to take a step back and just breathe. Oh and SLEEP. So try not to go along with the stereotypes of Spring Break. We have all the partying we want here at school, so just focus on getting rest and sleep and taking care of yourself.

Exercise

This may seem to contradict our first tip, but exercising is a perfect way to decompress and relax. When you exercise, your body releases endorphins that are chemically proven to make you happier. So get off the couch (or the lounge chair) and go for a run or a walk. We promise, it will improve your physical and mental health.

Catch up with family and friends

If you are going away with family or your friends it may be difficult to see or catch up with both. However, a week off from school is a great opportunity to set aside time for a phone call or Skype date. Your schedule is a lot freer without class, parties, meetings, etc. and you should be able to make time to talk to your loved ones.

Don’t overspend- make a budget.

This tip applies whether you’re going away, or not. If you are going on vacation, limit the spending while you are there. Your bank account will thank you when you can afford another vacation sometime soon because you didn’t go nuts this Spring Break. If you are home, limit the shopping trips and going out to dinner. Save the money for when you are back at school, trust us it will be worth it.

Remember schoolwork

Although this is supposed to be a “break”, most professors do not stop work completely. Make sure you remember to do assigned readings and homework. This will avoid a stressful first week back, and you will feel great about yourself for actually doing work during a vacation.

We know that some of these tips seem obvious, but they are all things that most of us forget. When we hear “Spring Break” we think “Check Out” but this should not be the case. In order to make the most of the vacation, keep these tips in mind and you will be sure to have a flawless week.
