How attractive is the actual campus at UO? Buildings and such…
-Freshman

Personally, I love the look of the campus. I am from California and the biggest issue I had with most of the University of California’s that I saw was the fact that they didn’t look “collegiate” to me.  They were mostly built in the seventies and their architecture reflects that, meaning most of their buildings look like older office buildings. I was so relieved when I saw the campus for the first time because I thought I was going to have to compromise to get that East Coast brick and ivy feeling. UO definitely has an old feel which appeals to me because the history behind my college is tangible. I mean we have a Pioneer cemetery on campus! How cool is that?

Most of the buildings are brick, there are a ton of trees and open green areas, and the architecture is really pretty. The downside of course of having such an old campus with old buildings is that quite a few of them are confusing to navigate once you are inside, as anyone who has ever been in Deady beyond the first (second?) floor can tell you. We also have quite a few sculptures scattered around the campus. If you prefer a more modern feeling, UO is certainly moving in that direction. Many of the new buildings, such as Lillis, the Matthew Knight Arena, and the John E. Jaqua Center for Student Athletes, all have a very sleek, modern feel with glass and shiny exposed metal. There are many people who feel that these buildings have no place here, but the mix of very old and very new keep the campus feeling current.

However, you may not actually get a good look at the campus until you have already been here for six months and can finally push back the hood of your rain jacket and look up to a sunny sky. There are some pictures on our website and on our Tumblr page.
