The College Experience, Pt. 2: Roommate Problems

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Millersville chapter.

The college experience. It’s something everyone talks about. This blog takes the college experience and transforms it into something personal. Follow two characters, Olivia and Allison through their crazy transition from high school goody-two-shoes into… something else. Read each girl’s journal to view different sides of the same story. Maybe you can sympathize, maybe you can empathize, but above all, savor the experience.

Alright, I don’t have much time, but I want to catch you up on the past week or so – sorry it’s going to be so short. About a week ago I got a text from Allison. She told me we are getting another roommate. Alexia just seems kind of… different. I did some Facebook creeping and from her pictures it just doesn’t look like she takes care of herself. I just hope everything works out. I’m trying to go into this all with an open mind.

Today was move in day. Everything was so crazy. Alexia got to the room first and completely took over. She took every inch of wall space. There were posters everywhere and a huge and hideous tapestry covering an entire wall. When I walked in I saw that two of the beds were bunked and there was one alone on the other side of the room. Of course she took the one hanging solo. Which means that Sam and I are left to the bunk beds.

I hope everything works out. Crossing my fingers.

Hah. Well. My prediction of this third roommate thing being a bad idea? Well, I was right.

Okay, I get it. My name was toward the end of the alphabet, so I got last dibs when it came to moving in because of the assigned times, but really? Alexia (our other roommate) took over the entire room! Apparently, she and her parents rearranged the ENTIRE room, and pushed all the other furniture to the other side, including bunking my and Olivia’s beds. Without even asking. Have I mentioned all her weird hippie/goth decorations? To each their own, but that is SO not my cup of tea. Whatever, at least Olivia and I are on the same side of the room.

Anyway.

It was super tough saying bye to my parents and Josh today. Whoops, I forgot to mention him since this special edition college journal was started. Yep – as you guessed, he’s my boyfriend. High school sweetheart – we just celebrated our two-year anniversary last week. He’s going to college too, but in Philadelphia, so we’ll see how the long distance thing goes. We both have plans for our future together, so I’m sure we can manage. I’m not too worried. Blah. I didn’t think I’d be this homesick already – it’s pathetic! Hopefully when classes get started I’ll be too preoccupied to miss anything.

On that note, orientation started earlier this afternoon. It’s kind of lame and I’m tired of all the icebreakers, but thank goodness for all the campus tours. I really hope I can get the hang of this place soon – I don’t want to get lost again in the pitch dark like I did tonight. Trying to navigate to Gaige through fields of construction is NOT an easy task, let me tell you.
