True Life: I’m Planning My Wedding on Pinterest

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at IU chapter.

Its no secret to keep, I spend half of my life on Pinterest. The new wave of social media where you can pin links and images onto several specifically categorized online pin boards has pulled me in and I doubt if there is a way to get myself out. Lucky for me, I have no intentions of logging off. Ever.

Recently a guy friend of mine came up to me after hanging over my shoulder watching my every pin in the span of the last five minutes. I put a beautiful Papilio gown onto a board titled ‘Wedding Dresses’ and a stunning turquoise bouquet onto another called ‘I do.’ He sat down and skeptically began to interrogate me about my recent hobby. After the initial “What is it?” and “How does it work?” he proceeded to ask me why I had a board, let along a few, dedicated to wedding planning when I am in fact a college freshman.

At first I was embarrassed thinking that he would deem me psychotic and our friendship would have sailed. But then I came to realize the many reasons myself and many other collegiettes have this sacred board in our arsenal. We are taught as little girls that our wedding is the one day dedicated to us, where we are able to do and say what we want, dress like a princess, eat cake, and share our love with our family and friends. Pinterest, to us dreamers, is an outlet for the ideas that we have been nursing since we were five.

Us girls dream of a perfect world, where we are successful, have a beautiful wedding and a lasting marriage. Its incredible to believe that we have control over these elaborate fantasies that one day can come true. Conjuring up our personal Cinderella stories is magical. We view the Pinterest board as having no limits, there is nothing we cannot imagine.

Being able to collect all these ideas, hopes, and dreams on one website is simply the frosting on the cake. Pinterest provides us with an outlet for these conjectures. There are no bounds to the fictions we desire. There are no ends to the bridal websites we can link to the board dedicated to our inner princess. And when the big day eventually comes, we will know exactly where to start our planning.

We cannot say what our actual weddings will be like, but for the time being we can illustrate it anyway we want. So boys, if we want to pin the newest poufy white gown, fancy flower arrangements, or Titanic-sinking-iceberg-sized engagement rings, let us! Restrain your judgments because the benefit of the doubt is that we aren’t discussing these futures with you… Yet.
