Swimwear is not fashion that strives to leave much to the imagination. That’s why the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition sells more copies than any other issue of the year and Kate Upton is now a household name across the world- (but like, she’s also kind of fabulous.) But in a time when ladylike dressing is more relevant than ever, why are we still skimping it out on the sand?
While high-waisted swimsuit bottoms really took off last season, with American Apparel bringing the look to the masses- (and Taylor Swift proving it’s totally pin-up girl, not matron-wear)- this season, designers are taking the look a step further with vintage shapes and patterns harkening back not to mid-century beach blanket bingo, but rather a bronzed, tropical 1970s glamour; think The Spy Who Loved Me meets Faye Dunaway in Chinatown.
It’s not about the sheer, floral sarong anymore– it’s about repurposing daywear for Daytona, and places sandier. Start with a billowy black and ivory striped maxi from Topshop or a lightweight floral kimono from H&M. Channel Chris Evert sportif chic circa her mid-‘70s US Open domination with a tennis dress inspired white shift or sheer bronze racerback. Top it all off with a floppy-brimmed sun hat in mixed sand tones and a pair of aviators that look like they were stolen from your boyfriend, Burt (Reynolds, of course), and you’ve got the look covered.
