Statement Necklaces for Spring

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

Is the neckline of your new blouse looking too bare and boring?  Are your go-to dresses lacking luster?  Does your favorite ensemble need a little pizzazz?  If you answered yes to any of these questions, I have the solution!  Two words: Statement. Necklace.

With bold floral prints and bright colors, it can be challenging to find the perfect accessories to compliment your spring apparel. So, whether you are looking to renovate your wardrobe or just add something new and fresh, these accessories can make any outfit pop!  Here are my top three styles of statement necklaces to invest in….

Pastel Colored Statement Necklace

Pastels are not just for Easter! These colors will go well with nearly everything in your closet and are perfect transition pieces.  They will liven up your neutral toned sweaters and dresses, but also look stunning against bold colors.  Pastels will compliment most colors without overpowering them.  If you’re feeling ambitious, try a teal or mint green necklace against a subtle floral pattern, or print.  It will add a lovely pop of color without seeming like too much.  Pastels are sweet and flirty, so try a light pink necklace against a tan sweater or white dress for a soft, spring-y look.  Or, if you’re not ready to pack up your favorite winter dress, use pastel accessories as transition pieces.  Pair a pale yellow or purple statement necklace with a brown, gray, or black dress to make it a bit more spring appropriate.

Try this ‘Pastel Teardrop Collar Necklace’ from Charlotte Russe;  $10.50.

Long, Pendant Necklace

Even with printed dresses and blouses, I often find myself thinking that my outfit isn’t complete—something is missing.

Invest in a long, pedant necklace to complete your look.  These necklaces are that ‘little extra something’ you’ve been looking for that will add some flare and interest to your outfit.  They are great because they are subtle and just enough to pull your whole ensemble together.  Often times I see the most boldly patterned frocks or tops paired with a massive statement necklace and it just becomes an eyesore!  You can avoid that problem by throwing on a simple pendant necklace.  Plus, because these necklaces are a little understated, this is a great opportunity to experiment with unique styles of pendants with birds, flowers, or stone work, especially if the traditional pendant isn’t your thing.  You could even try layering them with other necklaces too! These necklaces should hang an inch or two inches above your belly button, just below the bust.

Try the ‘Beautiful Mess’ Necklace from Modcloth;  $27.99.

Gold Layered Necklace

Every girl should own a gold-toned layered or tiered necklace, no matter the season.  Whether you buy one that is made up of beads or of simple chain-like strands, this necklace is a must.

Thin, gold strands will add just a touch of glimmer to your outfit without making you look like a disco ball.  They pair wonderfully with solid colored clothing items. Add one of these necklaces to a simple, solid colored blouse for an instant fix.  They also go great with shift dresses by adding some excitement to an otherwise basic dress.

Look for a necklace with at least three or four layers of strands.  If you opt for a style with beads or stones, choose one with neutral toned beads so they will compliment any color combination.

Try this ‘Teardrop Swag Necklace’ from Forever 21; $10.80.

Statement necklaces are very much in style right now, so you can find a ton of unique and interesting versions. But remember, as with any rule, there are exceptions to statement necklaces.  Make sure your necklace compliments your outfit rather than making it seem like too much.  Spring is such a fun and exciting season; embrace this opportunity to play with extravagant accessories!
