Every year the First Year Center Involvement of the Office of Residence Life hosts an event dedicated to raising awareness of violence and sexual assault against both men and women called ‘Take Back the Night (TBTN).’ The purpose of the solemn evening get-together is to create a supportive environment for expression and empowerment. Speakers are brought in to share their personal experiences, showing those that were assaulted they are not alone. Musical performances, a candle lighting ceremony, and march also take place.
Accompanying ‘Take Back the Night’ is the ‘Clothesline Project,’ a two-day visual display in Transitions that bears witness to sexual assault and domestic violence through the use of decorated T-shirts. JMU students, faculty, and local community members are previously asked to decorate t-shirts that represent their experience of domestic violence, sexual assault, or sexual victimization.
