A lad approached me this week who wanted to know my position on pet names. Pet names are the little nicknames girls give you like “babe” and “sweetheart.” Then when we are out with the guys, you walk up to us, nice and sweet-like, and you call us by these names. Well, they may be acceptable whenever it is just you and him, but whenever he’s in public, please behave.
It’s nothing against you being too cute; it’s just, you have to leave us with some kind of manhood while we are with the guys. You may think you know your man, that you have him completely figured out, and maybe that you even have him on a “leash,” but every guy loves feeling like a man. So, when you give us these names in public, you’re hurting our ability to be a man.
Now to turn the tables around, guys if you feel like calling your girl a name, don’t. Let’s be frank, it makes everyone feel weird. You aren’t married, and if you are, then she’s your property, more or less, so go ahead and call her whatever you want. But back to my point, I know it makes you feel all big and buff to holler at your girl from across the room. But, seriously? I mean, have a little respect for once in your life. Just because you call her “doll” doesn’t mean you treat her like one. Although, I guess it would be even worse if you called her by “babe” and treated her like a pig…
I guess what I’m cooking up in this article is respect. You either have it or you don’t. There is no medium or middle ground. I don’t care if you “aren’t serious” or “just really close friends,” have some respect, and if you give her a little, then go ahead and give her a lot. It was cute in elementary school where you were mean to the boys and girls that you secretly liked, but I hope that most of you have evolved out of that. If your ego is big, then so should your standards. College is four of the most important years of your life. Many, many people find the girl or guy they choose to spend the rest of their lives with. So lighten up and tighten up.
