Last week our neighbor, Emerson College, joined the list college campuses that have joined the environmental push to “Ban the Bottle.” These college campuses have been phasing out the sale of bottled water in an effort to reduce plastic waste from water bottles.
While the move to water-bottle free campus may be slightly far off for Northeastern University’s campus, I challenge you to join the “Ban the Bottle” movement and ditch plastic water bottles from your own life! Are you up for the challenge?
While bottled water can be more convenient, it is significantly more expensive and less environmentally friendly than tap water. Take the challenge and stop buying bottled water. Instead purchase a reusable water bottle, like the ones from Klean Kanteen, and join the millions of others who have decided to “Ban the Bottle.”

Some interesting facts:
- In 2007, Americans consumed over 50 billion single serve bottles of water; between 30 and 40 million single serve bottles went into landfills each year.
- It takes 17 million barrels of oil per year to make all the plastic water bottles used in the U.S. alone. That’s enough oil to fuel 1.3 million cars for a year.
- The recommended eight glasses of water a day, at U.S. tap rates equals about $.49 per year; that same amount of bottled water is about $1,400.
Find a reusable water bottle that is right for you! They come in a variety of colors and sizes. Some even have built in filters!
