My girl and I are planning on going out to the club, and I have a nice blazer with horizontal black and white stripes (which is actually more white than black) that I really want to wear with a pair of high-waisted leggings and my ankle booties/wedges. The problem is that the color of my shoes are tan, and I don’t know if it is even possible to make it work with the rest of my outfit. However I haven’t bought the leggings yet, so I was wondering what color of legging would actually make that whole outfit look good? I always have a hard time putting stuff together (smh).
P.S. if the shoes are a problem I’ll just wear some black pumps.
The Navy / Black / Brown problem:
First, I love that you came to me for fashion advice! In high school I won ‘Best Dressed,’ and it always flattered me to share that with the rest of the world. I LOVE fashion and trying new things, so this fits in perfectly.
As far as the color of the leggings are concerned, personally I think that either black or navy would work out fine. The same with the tan shoes; the colors would’ve been fine together! A lot of people think it’s weird to mix navy and black, or black and brown, but if we take a look at what was shown recently on the runways (Jil Sander’s Spring 2012 Ready to Wear) and at just at what’s cute, those mixes are everywhere. I feel like the best advice I can give you on mixing neutrals is wear jewelry that is closer to the oddball color in your outfit.
While I’m on the topic, I also like the idea of mixing metals. A lot of times when wearing an outfit of mixed neutrals, mixing the metals of your jewelry also allows for an added cohesion; and if you can manage the colors in a subtle way, you can elevate your outfit to another level.
Mixing neutrals, mixing metals, and being unconventional when it comes to color matching and color placement on the body is one of the easiest and probably most fun ways to play with fashion!
