Working it Outside

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Columbia Chicago chapter.

Clothes are quickly shedding as the temperatures continue to steadily rise and skin is becoming a part of everyone’s daily wardrobe. Because of this, and because of the incredible weather we’ve been graced with this early in the year, there is no excuse not to get out and about and get your body moving a bit.

The best part about the unusually warm weather that we’re experiencing right now is seeing tons of people getting outside and exercising. Whether it’s a jog through Grant Park, a bike ride on the lakefront, or even yoga on the beach, there are so many different options when it comes to shaking off that “icky” wintery slump we’ve all been stuck in for the past few months.

When it comes to exercising, I always dread it the entire day but as soon as I get home from a long day of classes and work I immediately go straight up to my room, change into work out clothes and fill up my water bottle. That way, I don’t have time to talk myself out of it. And once I’m actually working out, I am much happier. I feel so good about myself and the endorphins kick in as soon as I start sweating.

Something that I’ve been doing recently that’s enhancing my work outs is running with my dad along the Museum Campus. If you haven’t gone on the path through there or Grant Park yet, you must fit it into your spring schedule at some point. I experienced the indescribable view of the city skyline merging into Lake Michigan for the first time two weeks ago. My dad and I were jogging along and I had to stop dead in my tracks to take in the beauty of the city that I am so fortunate to live in. Getting a great work out in, while experiencing a sight like the one that our own city offers was an amazing way to start off the day.

A few other exercise ideas include rollerblading, biking, skateboarding, yoga, pilates, beach volleyball, or simply taking a stroll with a friend. Sometimes getting yourself off of the couch to appreciate the outdoors is all you need to make yourself feel brand new. So throw on a pair of shorts and a t-shirt, lace up those dusty gym shoes and get up and moving in any way you want. You’ll feel better in the end.
