THE HC TEAM WEIGHS IN: Our Favorite App

It’s an app-centric world, and it’s hard to tell what is necessary to have on your smartphone or tablet. What’s the best game to play? How can I listen to music on-the-go? Is there a way to manage all of my social media accounts a little bit easier? We’ve got the answers to all those questions and more, as the collegiettes at Her Campus are sharing their favorite apps so you know what to download!

And as always, let us know your app recommendations by leaving a comment below!

UrbanDaddy! You enter your location, who you are with, what you are looking to do (dinner, drinks, dancing, etc) and it not only tells you many options, but how far away they are, a little bio of each place, and maps out how to get there for you! Its wonderful if you find yourself out of your own neighborhood and looking for something fun to do!

I love my Pandora app! I often find myself getting bored with my own playlist and Pandora helps break that up a little. I can create multiple radio “stations” to fit whatever mood I’m in, while discovering new music.
Kerry Coppinger, PR Chair, Auburn University

Shazam is great if you’re at a concert, bar or party and hear a song you love but can’t figure out what it is. Just hit the “Shazam” button and it’ll give you the title, artist and album! There’s even a link to automatically download the track from iTunes.
As a hockey fan, I also love the NHL GameCenter app, which allows you to track, listen to or even watch live games from your iPhone!
Ally Koss, Graphic Designer, Northeastern University

My favorite app of the moment is actually a game. It may be my artistic side that has a little bit of a bias, but Draw Something is so fun! And it’s great for a laugh when you’re playing with friends.
Christina Troy, Design Associate, Merrimack College alum

A brand new app just launched on our campus called uTaP. The app lets you message any other students who are close by you geographically. Then anyone who opens the application can see these messages and comment on them, like them, or send private messages to other users. You can control your privacy and it’s an awesome way to find out about restaurant/bar specials, parties and other events on your campus!!

If you have an iSomething, you need to use and abuse those photo apps. Everyone knows about Instagram, but have you heard about “CatLovers“? Trick your friends by inserting cats into your favorite Kodak moments.
Kelsey Mulvey, Contributing Writer, Boston University

My favorite app is a game called 7 Words. It is basically a word scramble game where you are given clues and you have to put together a group of letters that answer the clue. It is super addicting — once you download it, you won’t be able to keep off of your phone. It can be dangerous during classes, especially the more dull, boring lectures.

Hootsuite is my favorite app, because it lets me post to multiple social media sites at the same time, and schedule my tweets/status updates in advance (it’s been great for our Her Campus branch!).
Makena Sage, Campus Correspondent, Bryant University

Twitter! It’s best way to get news I care about fast
Elizabeth Carey, Campus Correspondent, UC: Berkeley

I love my IMDb app! My brother is always the guy who says: “I know I’ve seen that guy somewhere. What else has he been in?” While we used to let it bother us for days until one of us snapped and realized: “He was in Scream 2!” the IMDb app allows us to figure out what else we remember that actor from in seconds.

If you want to impress your boy toy, introduce him to Cat Effects, a free app that lets you draw or stamp cats on your photos. The guys on my Alternative Spring Break trip flipped for it. Seriously: every single guy on the trip went NUTS for this. I don’t get it — must be a guy thing!
Sydney Nolan, Contributing Writer, University of Missouri: Columbia

Evernote” is the best app for iPads because it lets you download documents from emails or online and you can edit them/read them in a very easy format. I use it all the time to save paper instead of printing out long readings.
Charlotte Bax, Campus Correspondent, Haverford College

I just downloaded it this week, but I am already obsessed with My Fitness Pal. It’s basically a food diary; you input everything you eat and it tells you how many calories, grams of fat, sugar, carbs, etc. you consumed. If you are trying to lose weight it will calculate how many calories, sugar, carbs, etc. you can eat a day to achieve your desired goal. I like that they make it so easy to input the food. They already have a whole list of common recipes and restaurant items from national chains. You can even use the scanner to scan packaged food. And it’s free!

Nike Training Club (NTC)! Not only does it have awesome workouts, it has every kind of workout. There are 30 or 45-minute total-body cardio, strength training, or combination workouts, or 15-minute workouts that target a specific body part. It shows you how to do the moves in case you don’t know them, signals the timer for you, and even throws in motivating quotes and encouragement. I use it all the time and even got my mom hooked on it!
