With the current Student Council elections in full swing, we wanted you to get to know the current Student Council Co-Head and Haverford’s fearless leader: Lizzie Douglas. Not only is Lizzie passionate about her role on the SC, but also she is involved in many different forms of student government at Haverford. No doubt you have crossed paths with her smiling face, received her SC emails, or even been one of her freshman!
Name: Lizzie Douglas
Year: 2013
Major: History (Concentration: Peace, Justice, and Human Rights)
Hometown: Winchester U.K./Harvard, MA.
How long have you served on the Haverford Student Council?
I joined Students’ Council as the Officer of Multiculturalism in Fall 2010 and then became the SC Co-President for this academic year: so nearly two years.
How else are you involved on campus?
I participate in other forms of student self-governance: I’m on a few committees in addition to being on SC. I was on the AMA Committee last year and I’m now an HCO for the Class of 2016! I also work in the Admission Office as a tour guide and get to tell prospective students why Haverford is so great. One day a week, I work for my history professor as a research assistant; I get to spend many hours in a dusty archive being a huge history nerd. During my freshman and sophomore years I was on the crew team and wrote/edited for the Bi-Co News. Once I got involved in SC, I had to give those up.
What has been your greatest accomplishment as the Student Council Co-President?
Of everything Florencia and I have done, I think the re-opening of Lunt Café and the comprehensive survey of student opinion on financial aid are the two accomplishments of which I’m most proud. Both took many hours, but the final product was really wonderful and well worth the effort.
What is your favorite event/program that the SC has sponsored?
I’m not sure this counts as an event or program, but I think a real strength of SC are its Appointments and Budgeting Committees. Through these two committees, so many students can get involved in student self-governance and get funding for the multitude of wonderful student organizations on campus. Our Treasurer and Co Vice-Presidents, who run those committees, do such a great job getting members of the community involved with campus life.
Are you planning to run again?
No, I’m leaving SC after this year. I’ve had a blast, but it’s time for other students to enjoy the same experiences I got to have this year.
