Shall I begin the countdown to LDOC? I could, but I always feel like countdowns seem to slow what we wish would arrive faster. So instead of tallying the final days til B.o.B. hits the stage, I’ll equip you with a few tips for maximizing your bliss on LDOC. You may not think it is important, but what you accessorize with beyond basic apparel can affect your all-day experience. Here are a few items worth remembering:

Rain, rain, go away—Having gone through LDOC once, I can tell you my day would have been greatly improved had I prepared with this one marvel technology – the umbrella. Yep, last year when it rained, it definitely poured. I was caught on West Campus with nothing but the clothes on my back and a need to take shelter. So, collegiettes – bring your umbrellas!

Store it in style—If you have a bunch of little things you know you can’t leave your dorm without, a light cross-body bag is perfect for carrying knick-knacks such as gum, lip balm, and Aspirin. Places like H&M, Macy’s, and Nordstrom carry cute and affordable styles.

Do your ears hang low?—In terms of jewelry, you may wish to glamourize a bit on LDOC. But with lavish jewelry comes a price – the pain of having it swing around, get stuck to things, and basically weigh you down. For these reasons, I wouldn’t recommend wearing those heavy chandelier earrings. You’ll be jostled around in a crowd all night at a sweaty concert, so the last thing you want is to feel like your ears are going to fall off. Keep the jewelry to a minimum – simple pearl earrings, a ring, and maybe a watch will strike the perfect balance between Kate Middleton and Rihanna.

Shady business—Rain or shine, the show goes on. Just as you should prepare for the stormiest weather, you should also be ready for a glorious spring day. That means you will want to protect your peepers from harsh sunlight at the outdoor events. Keep a pair of shades handy. You can score a great pair from a variety of places, from retail stores like Target to specialty stores like Sunglass Hut. What a great reason to go to Southpoint!

As you can see, little things can affect the big picture on the big day. If you are smart about your accessories, you lessen the risk of a chance mishap on LDOC. I hope this year’s festivities prove to be memorable for you, whether it’s your first or final Last Day of Classes!

Sabrina is a Junior at Duke University, and is double majoring in English and Public Policy. A born and bred South African, Sabrina has traveled to the USA to pursue her higher education. As well as being a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, Sabrina is also Assistant Vice President for Recruitment for the Panhellenic Association at Duke. Sabrina has written for Duke's daily newspaper, The Chronicle and Duke's fashion magazine, FORM. After graduating, she hopes to attend law school preferably in her favourite city, New York. In her spare time, Sabrina vegges out to various fashion blogs, mindless TV (Pretty Little Liars anyone?) and online shopping (which borders on an addiction). If you manage to catch her in an energetic mood, she's probably on her way to cardiodance (or to the nearest mall).
