Shout Out to Future Collegiettes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

It’s that time of year. The time of year when there is an abundance of wide-eyed high school seniors on campus with maps, cameras, and name badges. Oh, hey, prospective students, welcome to Duke!

I remember being a p-frosh… walking around campus during Blue Devil Days pretending I was a student, sitting in on classes, and having lunch in the Great Hall. Those were good times. Times filled with those three infamous questions:

“What’s your name?”
“Where are you from?”
“What do you want to study?”

Prospective students all have one very important thing in common: they all have had the honor of being accepted into Duke University, by far the best university around. Okay, okay, I may be a little biased. But, what does Duke have? Great academics, great people, great opportunities, great professors, great athletics…the list is endless. If you are looking for a work hard, play hard environment, you’ve found the right place.

By serving as an Admissions Ambassador this past year, I had the chance to interact with many of the p-frosh who visited during Blue Devil Days. Special shout out to the two p-frosh I had the opportunity to host, Celia and Emily! I really enjoyed getting to know some of you guys and fielding all your questions. I specifically remember one comment from a girl who was still trying to decide between Duke and a few other colleges. She said: “Everyone here seems… surprisingly normal.” That’s right, Duke University: the university of normal people. Duke attracts outgoing and well-rounded people with a variety of passions and interests, who just happen to also be smart (and humble). This campus is filled with people who have done and will do some pretty amazing things, and it’s pretty special to be a part of such a vibrant community.

Watching all the p-frosh and their families walk around campus brings back a lot of great memories. But, more than anything, it reminds me of how grateful I am that I chose Duke. Picking a college can either be really stressful, or the easiest decision of your life. Or maybe it will be a little bit of both. My advice to you, future collegiettes, is to go to the place that feels most like home. Where can you see yourself succeeding? If that place is Duke, that’s awesome. If it’s not, that’s awesome too.

So to all you p-frosh out there, you may have heard it a hundred times before, but it never hurts to hear it again: Congratulations! Good luck on your decision from everyone at Her Campus Duke. We would love to see you around Duke’s campus next year!

My name is Sarah Haas and I am a sophomore at Duke University just tryin' to figure it all out! I'm from a small town in North Carolina called Granite Falls, right in the heart of the piedmont of the Appalachian Mountains. I'm passionate about social justice, gender equality, volunteerism, and the pursuit of a good cup of coffee. I love to read and write- with a special interest in poetry- and I'm always updating a blog or social media site- so, I love being a part of Her Campus!
Betty Liu is a senior at Duke University where she is majoring in Biomedical Engineering.  Although her main interests lie in bioengineering, she loves keeping up with the latest trends on Duke's campus. Also, she enjoys learning about new music, reading and travelling around the world. One of her life dreams is to go to all seven continents! So far, she has been to four.
