I don’t know if you’ve been following the women’s softball team this year, but talk about an impressive season! On their spring break trip to Florida, they posted a record of 12-0. When they got back to New England, they continued on their amazing winning streak, climbing to a record of 22-0 before losing for the first time to Keene State. They now have a BAMF end of season record of 34-4. They have set a program record for wins this season, and made it into postseason play for the first time since 2006. After sweeping Middlebury in a doubleheader last Saturday, the Amherst softball team earned the right to host the NESCAC championship for the first time ever.

Another cool thing about the Amherst softball team is that sophomore Arielle Doering was just named NESCAC pitcher of the week. She helped Amherst in their epic wins against Middlebury, striking out six batters. It was that game that clinched Amherst as the hosts of the 2012 NESCACS.

Yesterday, in the first round of the NESCACS, Amherst took on Bowdoin. The Jeffs came back from behind to win the game 6-5. Today, Amherst suffered a 1-0 loss to Tufts. Nevertheless, their season was still incredibly impressive. Amherst students tend to frequent men’s sporting events more than they do women’s. Baseball, with their field conveniently located right at the bottom of Mem Hill, is more popular among spectators than is softball, whose field is inconveniently located over by the football field. The softball team’s record this year is proof of just how awesome women’s sports at Amherst are. Hopefully this will encourage everyone to remember to come out for the Lady Jeffs a little more often!
