We get it collegiettes, summer is here and the last thing you want to think about is anything, and I mean anything, school related. But school-related things should most definitely be on your mind. Okay, maybe History260 can be thrown into the back for a few months but your resume should be right in front. Take the summer to build up your resume, connect with potential employees, and create a professional image. With these few tips below, every collegiette will have a resume that is reading for those fall career fairs!

1. Work
Get rid of your less-serious babysitting job (well keep it for the weekends) and apply for a more serious job that will be beneficial in an academic way! Apply for a social media position at a new company, a sales associate position for your favorite clothing store, or even a secretary of an accounting firm. All of these will bring out your best skills and increase your communication ones. Don’t be afraid to ask yourself, “what kind of job is the right one?” Also, don’t be afraid to turn down one. We all know everyone is scrambling for any money they can find but the chances of getting another opportunity down the road can look good if you put yourself out there (in the business world). Find something you are passionate about and pursue it. Nothing is more attractive to an employee than to see a woman like you grab the world with her hands with dedication and confidence. Look for that job that has income focus, future focus, and of course passion focus! SnagAJob has helped me out tremendously-check them out here to help you too!

2. Volunteer
An employer also loves to see someone who is not just a 4.0 student. In fact, talking to a few different employers, they have all said they would rather see a 3.2 with a lot of activities—they want you to be well-rounded! Joining an organization or club at school can happen once the fall hits but during the summer, volunteering is a great way to become well-rounded. Make a pledge to yourself to make a trip every Friday afternoon to your local soup kitchen. Or when visiting a grandparent at a convalescent home, stay a few extra hours and see if the Activities Department needs any help! Once things get into full swing, higher positions will sure be offered with longer hours…hint: something worth putting on your resume! Doing the small things in life is not only beneficial to society but it is also great experience to real-world situations that you may one day be faced with. 3. Connect
How many of you hear on a daily basis, “CONNECT! CONNECT! CONNECT!” Here at Bryant, the Amica Center is always screaming that from the rooftops. Okay, I’ve never actually seen them standing on the roof but hopefully you get the analogy there. Connecting is so important and has never been so easy than it is today. Today everyone is trying to climb to the top of the company but everyone knows you have to know someone to get there; to get your name on Wall Street, to get the best suit for the best price, and even to get your lunch for free. You have to know someone everywhere you go or else you become a number. Preparing to not be a “number” is easy with all the social networks that are revolving around us. The Amica Center holds a number of workshops each semester having to do with exactly this—connecting online. Although they are done for the spring, new ones will definitely be held in the fall so always check for that. In the meantime, read how to manage your social networking and online presence here-which in the long run helps you to connect.

Keeping school work in mind is never a bad thing-especially for summer.  It will help your brain jump back into “school mode” once fall hits.  If you have other great tips on how to build your resume this summer, leave them here below!  Otherwise, have a great summer collegiettes.  Don’t forget your polka-dot-bikini but also don’t forget about your job, volunteer time, or connections!  A polka-dot-bikini won’t get you too far in life but a great resume and personality will.
