The Bachelorette 8: Trophy Wife? No Thanks.

If you’d like to catch up on this season of The Bachelorette, visit Her Campus Mizzou for past recaps!
This week Emily and the boys were in Dubrovnik, Croatia sans Ricki (Emily’s daughter).  Once again, the amazing scenery sucked me in, but this time the guys were right there with me, proclaiming that Emily was “the only thing more gorgeous than Croatia.” But their outdoor admiration lasted only for a second and of course, attention went back to the timeless question: “Will I get a one-on-one date this week?”  Who did it go to?  Travis
the guy that brought the gigantic egg at the beginning.

One-on-One Date: Travis

We find out some crucial information early on.  Travis was engaged.  The engagement ended two years ago.  Travis has an earring.

They headed to a balancing stone that, according to Croatian legend, would give you luck in love if you were able to balance on it.  Emily was also trying to use this as a ploy to have Travis take his shirt off.  I however, was not as interested in Emily’s venture and was relieved when he didn’t fall for it.  Was there any chemistry on this date?  I didn’t think so and neither did most of those guys. yes”> I found myself distracted, yet again, by his funky beard design that reminded me of Seneca’s in The Hunger Games.  He’s no good.

Then, Emily and Travis went to dinner and Emily said that she was looking for romance.  The stage was set and it was all up to Travis.   Emily said that their relationship made for a great friendship but it lacked the romance she was looking for.  Their goodbye seemed amicable, but then Travis broke down and threw his umbrella.  Um, childish and unnecessary.

Group Date: To The Movies

This date was shameless promotion at its finest.  The group went to see Brave, the new Pixar movie.  ABC of course was scrambling to find parallels between Emily’s situation and the situation of the main character in Brave.  I felt like I was watching one of those commercials that have parts of a movie trailer combined with audience reactions right after they see it.

Well, then ABC made up for it by having the guys dress up in kilts and participate in a version of the Highland Games.  The rode in gloriously-donkeys and kilts galore.  Archery came first and the guys were actually quite good at it.  Chris went first in the next event-log throwing-and needed a little more practice at that too.  Sean managed to throw it so hard that the log broke and Emily was definitely impressed.  The last event was a sort of ‘log tug of war’ and Chris came in dead last again. After the games were over, Emily shared that there was an award for the bravest.  Chris was given the award for keeping a smile on his face through his failure.  The prize?  They kissed and Emily shared that she had missed him.

After the games came the party.  Arie apologized to Emily again for not standing up for her during the Kalon situation (she eagerly forgave him as they made out against a Croatian wall).  During her time with Jef, Emily got her cuddle on flirted up a storm.  Chris put his heart on the line and told Emily that he was falling in love with her.  It was a tight race for the rose, but the early award foreshadowed that Chris would get it in the end.

One-on-One Date: Ryan

From the second he found out he’d be going on a date, Ryan was being ridiculously arrogant.  And, he spent 3 hours getting ready for it
probably trimming his funky Seneca beard.  Ryan was so “full-of-lines” when Emily picked him up that the guys all burst into laughter once they left.

The best way to sum up Ryan’s behavior during their date is to give you a sampling of some of his Ryan-isms:

  • “I’m definitely trouble.”
  • “I’m a really safe driver. “You’re like a trophy wife.”
  • “She’s definitely gonna be somebody’s trophy wife and I’m pretty sure I have a good shot at that being mine.”
  • “How are you gonna say you don’t want to be a trophy wife and then come looking like that?”

Emily was back and forth about Ryan.  He was at times demeaning and at times complimentary.  In my opinion, she shouldn’t have to go back and forth for occasional flattery from Ryan when she has plenty of guys that will give it to her 24/7.  Emily looked incredibly uncomfortable while he read them out loud to her.  Then, it was her turn to speak: “I don’t want to be someone’s mold.”  There we go, Emily!  At last, it was the beginning of the end for Ryan.  Emily finally realized that they weren’t looking for the same things and told Ryan that she couldn’t give him the rose.

His reaction was pretty priceless.  He kept cutting her off when she was trying to talk and Emily began to get choked up.  He made an appeal but to no avail.  Really Ryan?  Just leave.  But on his way out he obviously had to remind America that he was “the greatest man in the world.”

After Emily got back from the date, Arie surprised Emily by showing up at her Croatia abode.  He praised Emily for being a good judge of character and sending Ryan home.  Emily was so happy to see him that she gave him the rose she didn’t give to Ryan (to keep as a secret).  Arie solidified his position as a frontrunner.

The Cocktail Party

Doug and John were on the chopping block tonight.  Emily told John that she felt he was playing it cool and looked for him to open up.  John showed her that he has carried around his grandparents’ funeral cards in his wallet since 1999.  It was definitely a touching moment, and Emily was impressed. During her time with Doug, Emily forced him to make a physical move by having him scoot closer to her.  Emily asked him to be more confident as opposed to humble and their time overall didn’t go well.

Chris had a rose already.

Got a Rose:

Sean

Jef

Arie

And, in a surprise twist, both John and Doug were given roses.  Emily felt that she had much more to learn about them and wasn’t ready to send either home.

What do you think of Emily’s decision to keep both John and Doug?  Who do you think is No. 1 in Emily’s mind right now?  What do you think is up with the Arie/producer drama seen in the previews?

Until next week in Prague, collegiettes!
