Matt Bomer won’t be scribbling details about his personal life on a bathroom wall anytime soon.
That, he claims, is the equivalent of answering the media’s prying questions about his sexual orientation, questions Bomer has been avoiding for years. But keeping his private life out of the public eye doesn’t mean he’s ashamed of anything. The 34-year-old actor, who came out in his acceptance speech during the Desert AIDS Fund in February, insists that he never tried to hide the fact that he was gay. In fact, Bomer referred to his family–longtime partner and publicist Simon Halls and their three kids Kit, Walker, and Henry–as “his proudest accomplishment.”
The Magic Mike actor (in theaters June 29!) was moved to tears when a member of the military approached him, saying what a positive impact his coming out had made on the public. But Bomer knows the real impact comes when “gay” is no longer a part of his title.
“What we really have to do is stop the adjective before the job title — whether it’s ‘black actor,’ a ‘gay actor’ or ‘anything actor.’ Everybody thinks that equality comes from identifying people, and that’s not where equality comes from. Equality comes from treating everybody the same regardless of who they are. I hope the media and the press catches on to that because it’s time to move out of 1992,” Bomer said.
