In Her Closet: Health Editor Sammie Levin

August’s “In Her Closet” series gives you an all-access pass to the wardrobes of the HC team.

I’m Sammie, Her Campus’ Health Editor and editorial intern, and I’d like to cordially invite you to my closet—which incidentally happens to be the closet that R.Kelly was trapped in for all 22 chapters of “Trapped in the Closet,” but I don’t like to brag.

Let’s start off with a few disclaimers:

  1. That closet in the thumbnail picture is not mine, it’s Paris Hiltons,’ but a girl can dream, right?
  2. I had to use my phone to take these pictures, so I blame that—not my complete lack of photography skills—on the amateur quality of the photos.
  3. As my freshman roommate can attest to, somehow my clothes frequently happen to end up crumpled up on the floor, strewn about my room, or shoved into a drawer, but this phenomenon is obviously out of my control, so please excuse all the wrinkles. I would, of course, iron these featured clothes (or more accurately, kindly ask my mom to do so) before wearing them in public so don’t hate.
  4. R. Kelly has never, and sadly probably will never, be in my closet—okay let’s get started.

What: Patterned blazers
Where: The two on the left are from Zara; the two on the right are from Forever 21
Why: They’re an easy way to liven or dress up an otherwise simple outfit.
How: I usually pair these with a solid colored or sheer tank or undershirt, and then black pants or jeans. I try to highlight or complement the colors in the blazer with similarly colored jewelry or shoes.

What: Statement necklace
Where: Anthropologie
Why: Like the blazers, eye-catching, bold necklaces like this bring a personal touch to whatever your wearing.
How: I’ve worn this with white or orange pants and a plain top, or with the flowered pants featured below because the necklace picks up on the colors of the flowers.

What: Floral pants
Where: Anthropologie
Why: Patterned pants were everywhere this spring, and I’m really into floral patterns so I went with these. I also really like how the colors can work for spring or fall.
How: With a solid gray, black, orange, or dark green tank top or t-shirt.

What: Giraffe sweatshirt
Where: A store in London that only sells handmade shirts and sweatshirts with animals on them
Why: When I came across this store this summer, I had to hold back my tears of joy. I weirdly gravitate toward clothes with animals on them (my favorite shirt features a cat smoking a pipe) and when I saw this sweatshirt with a giraffe wearing a Hawaiian t-shirt bursting from the pocket, it needed to be mine immediately. My friends may or may not have named him Rafael. Added bonus: since the sweatshirt is handmade, it’s unbelievably comfortable.
How: worn with anything and everything, anywhere and everywhere

What: Big ol’ rings
Where: from left—a gift, made the next one at the jewelry shop at my camp, two on the right are both from Forever 21
Why: They’re swanky, without the high price tag. I get compliments on the turquoise one all the time and no one believes that it was only $6!
How: I wear the gold leaf one with just about anything, and then wear the purple and turquoise ones when I am either wearing those colors, neutral colors, or colors that go well with them (for example, I like pairing turquoise with coral, yellows, oranges, and pinks).

What: Multi-fabric heels
Where: Juicy Couture
Why: These shoes were marked down a lot because of a huge sale, and I liked the mix of textures and colors so I went for it.
How: I recently wore these out with red pants and a sheer black top, and another time with black pants and a neutral lace top.

What: Sparkly vest
Where: Bloomingdales (Alice & Olivia)
Why: I like shiny things
How: With black leggings and a long tank or flowy long sleeved shirt

What: High-rise jean shorts
Where: Free People
Why: I find tight, overly short shorts to be extremely uncomfortable, so this looser, higher-rise works much better for me and I like that it hits lower on my leg than most shorts.
How: With a tucked in tank top or crop top.

What: Little Black Dress
Where: LF
Why: They always say every girl needs one of these, and that’s proven true for me—it’s actually awkward how many times this dress makes appearances in my Facebook photos, whether it’s me or one of my friend’s wearing it. The neckline is sheer, there is a peplum on the front, and there is a cut-out on the back, so even though it’s just a plain black dress, the details make it a little more provocative.
How: With heels for a dressier night out, wedges if it’s a less fancy affair, and definitely some jewelry to add color.

What: Workout top
Where: Lululemon
Why: If you don’t own a shirt with a built-in bra, get one stat.
How: With yoga pants or running shorts, but I wish it were more socially acceptable to wear shirts like this in everyday life because they’re so comfortable and convenient.

And that concludes this sneak peek into my closet. I hope you’ve enjoyed it! For R. Kelly’s sake, please leave the door open on your way out.
