Fashion Blog: Fashion Cutouts

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

The fashion world finally, finally got cutouts right. I remember a time when the trend of ripping your clothes in any risqué spot was unflattering and, for lack of a better word, trashy. Now, however, fashion has embraced the trend and when done right, cutouts are most definitely a chic and edgy detail for any look.

Personally, I love cutouts in unexpected places such as the collarbone area or on the shoulders, hips, and back. When done tastefully, the cutout trend will give any traditional look a fun and fresh new feel.

At this year’s ACM awards, Taylor Swift rocked the trend with side cutouts on her white gown by J. Mendel. Without the geometric cutouts, the dress may have come off as just a traditional white dress, but instead, the singer looked better than ever in the modern, sleek look.

Maybe I am a tad bit biased due to my love for Harry Potter, but Emma Watson looks absolutely stunning in this neutral mini with back cutouts. Styled flawlessly, Watson looked adorable sporting her sleek pixie-cut and nude pumps at the 2011 Elle Style Awards.

Featuring Eva Longoria for her stunning Marchesa gown at this year’s 2012 Cannes Film Festival was a no-brainer. With cutouts beautifully placed on the front at the neck, as well as on the back, this is one of the most elegant gowns I have ever seen. Longoria gets my vote for best cutout gown of 2012, hands down.

Although the cutout trend has more frequently been seen on red carpet event gowns, more and more stores are doing great tops with fun back and shoulder cutouts for everyday. Take for example, this lovely top also by Urban Outfitters. Available in several colors, this button-up top with edgy shoulder cutouts, is perfect for everyday. Wear it to class, lunch, whatever! While still looking professional, this piece will allow you to try the trend without attending a formal event.

I can’t help but smile upon seeing this precious cutout number by Urban Outfitters. The heart-shape is so unexpected on the back of this simple mini. An adorable summer option, this dress can be found online in four alternative colors.

Is this a trend you are willing to try? With endless cutout options available, there is a way for everyone to pull-off the trend while still looking chic, not cheap.
