For the University of South Florida, formal sorority recruitment is literally just days away. I’ve come up with a few commonly asked questions or statements about Greek life to get you motivated to sign up for recruitment.
“Sorority life isn’t for me.”
WRONG! Sorority life is for you. Don’t pay attention to the stereotypes, movies, media, etc. Being in a sorority is one of the best experiences a woman can have in her college life. Personally, when I came into my organization two years ago, I couldn’t have imagined becoming the person I am today. It’s because of my sisters that I was able to grow, and continue growing, into a better version of myself.
”What if I don’t have the time to commit to sorority life?”
The great thing about sorority life is that it teaches you time management. Usually chapters give you a heads up a few weeks or months in advance so that you know certain days that you’ll have events or meetings.
“Aren’t I just paying for my friends by being in a sorority?”
No! Sometimes I get people who come up to me and say, “I’m just paying for my friends,” but it’s not like I hand my sisters money every time I want to hang out with one of them. We hang out with each other because we want to, not because we have to. The money you pay is going towards the organization itself. A lot of times your money goes towards shirts, socials and sisterhood events. I always say the money I’m paying now is an investment in my future because being in a sorority is one of the best training tools for working in the real world. You learn how to work with different personalities, you can take part in leadership roles that are very similar to working in a professional environment and you can get involved with different activities that teach you how to manage your time better.
“What is recruitment like?”
This year recruitment is about a weeklong process from start to finish. You’ll be placed in a recruitment counselor group, more commonly known as Pi Chi group. You and about 30 other women will have two Pi Chi’s to help you through the whole process of going through recruitment. Your Pi Chi’s will explain on orientation night (August 31st at 7 p.m. in MSC Ballroom) what each day of recruitment is going to be like.
“So how do I sign up?”
You can click here, there is a link on the home page that will lead you to the registration page. You have until orientation night on August 31st to register, so we definitely encourage you to do it as soon as possible. There is a fee of $75 to register, but that money goes towards a bag filled with freebies that you’ll receive, a t-shirt and food you will be getting throughout the week.
If you visit the website, there is a page on recruitment and tips for what to wear, questions to ask and other important information. My best advice is to go into recruitment with an open mind because that’s the best way to find where you’re supposed to be. Also, BE YOURSELF! I can’t stress that enough; chapters want to get to know who you are, so don’t try to be what you think they want to see because what they want to see is you.
