New York Fashion Week started off with a bang this year on September 6. Numerous designers flaunted their latest looks, showcasing new and interesting styles and trends for the Spring/Summer 2013 season.

Brace yourselves: gauchos pants are back! The “slouchy chic” look is definitely a hit. Some popular designers included Gary Graham, who experimented with draping and layering long dresses and shirts. Dresses and shirts were belted, but in some of these pieces, models seemed overwhelmed by the amount of fabric. Looks inspired by the 70’s involved loose articles of clothing, such as exaggerated sleeves and wide-leg pant. Marc Jacobs, Bottega Veneta, and Yigal Azrouel flaunted large, colorful, and curvilinear prints and patterns. These seemed to really pop on the runway.

Thakoon Addition’s spring line included very detailed girly and spring-y clothing. In my opinion, the pieces in this collection look very wearable and comfortable. Thankoon showed a lot of outfits in white cotton, khaki, navy and deep red. I was surprised to see these pops of darker colors for the spring season.

A few designers, including Philip Lim, Alexander Wang, and DKNY, showed long and short fisherman-like white jackets. These are cute and becoming more popular, but I’m still a big fan of the trench coat.

I notice that a lot of girls wear cutout shirts and dresses around campus. Last season, the cutout style was my favorite! I’m excited to see that cutouts are back. Alexander Wang and Victoria Beckham showed a few similar white bodycon “laser” cut-out dresses for the spring.

Leather jackets, leggings, and shorts appeared in several collections. To my surprise, a lot of black leather was seen on the runway for spring. I like saving black and darker colors for winter. The expected bright colors, such as orange and yellow, were popular as well. I really like the bright colored leather! These fashionable pieces really grabbed my attention.

Digital prints populated collections. While looking through photos, I saw a lot of unique bock print patterns. Zig zag and psychedelic patterns are shown in dresses and pantsuits. The houndsooth print was shown with a new modern and hallucinogenic twist. Designers also experimented with futuristic pieces most likely inspired by space, aliens, and planets. Models literally look like they walked out of a Star Wars movie. I can’t say I’m a fan of this particular style of “futurism.”

And of course, florals are back! You can’t have spring without floral patterns and prints. Numerous bright and colorful floral patterns appeared on the runway. Zac Posen even opened his show with abstract floral pieces.

Look out for these styles and trends around campus throughout the spring! (Hopefully the Star Wars inspired look won’t be around!)
