Reality TV Shows You Should Be Watching!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Vanderbilt chapter.

I am useless when it comes to technology. I would be lying if I told you I had downloaded Microsoft on my own, as my Mac still seems foreign to me. Printers make no sense, and I have no idea what an Ethernet cable is. It is scary, then, to think about how much technology I use. Aside from schoolwork and online shopping, I have come to love computers for one specific use: online television.

I am not about to write a tale of my computer, however. Instead, I’m going to reflect on my failing romance with Netflix in favor of a long lost love: cable. While rekindling this old flame, I have discovered a whole new world called reality TV. So from me to you, here are the best of the best.

Project Runway: For those who don’t know, this is a show that takes on promising, undiscovered designers who create new looks each week. Project Runway cultivates a euphoric illusion of style as viewers like me become engrossed in the drama and the designs. The truth is, most people can’t make a dress out of candy in one day, but we now know it’s possible. The show also has the extra bonus of being hosted by Heidi Klum.

The Bachelor: While the show has transformed from an innocent “looking for love” program into a way for young, good-looking people to get their five minutes of fame, it still maintains its initial drama and favoritism. The drama ensues as old candidates come back to take on the role of bachelor/bachelorette, the most recent being Emily Maynard. Rumors also suggest that next season’s bachelor will be one of the men who didn’t win Emily’s heart.

Dance Moms: This show is not about the young, talented dancers or their infamous teacher. Instead, as the name so clearly states, it is about the moms. Every little girl wants to be a dancer, so this show strikes a chord with our nostalgia and feeds our appetite for drama. We become viewers of a world with gossip, cliques, and temper-tantrums, all among middle-aged women. The dancing itself is intriguing, but the moms make the show addicting.

Snooki and J-Woww: Watching Snooki and J-Woww live together is almost like watching a train wreck. We see Snooki’s transition from inebriated to impregnated and the resulting conflict as J-Woww maintains her party drive. Not everything is perfect for our favorite girls from the Shore, but we never know what will happen next.

With all these shows to discover, I wish you the best and impart to you this piece of advice: reality TV isn’t always reality. As much fun as it is to watch other people wreak havoc in their personal lives, we must also remember that we have lives that need havoc, too. Now, enjoy! I know I will.

Stacey Oswald, originally from South Florida, came to Vanderbilt as a member of the class of 2015 and got involved with HerCampus her freshman year. She became assistant editor that year and is now the Campus Correspondent for Vanderbilt HC as a sophomore. Stacey is currently a columnist for Ask Miss A- Nashville and the life section of The Hustler. She's also very involved in her sorority, Kappa Delta, as well as Invisible Children. Outside of school and her extracurriculars, Stacey finds happiness in many sources, the most crucial being exercise and the sun. She loves to attend exercise classes and is an avid runner; she recently completed the Country Music Half Marathon. She also loves Vitamin D, especially when on the beach- though of course, she only soaks up the sun after applying SPF. A few of the things Stacey couldn't live without? Good food (especially from Sweet Cece's, Bricktops, and Samurai Sushi), great books (The Hypnotist's Love Story is a recent favorite), her family back in Florida, her wonderful boyfriend, and all of the great friends she's made at Vanderbilt.
