Freshman 15 vs. Calorie Counting Apps

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Miami chapter.

If you don’t want to admit it, then I’ll admit it for you: you gained weight your freshman year. And trust me, you’re not alone. All those people who warned you the summer before your freshman year of the dangers of snacking late at night and drinking every weekend were right. And if all of that is true, you probably went home for the summer and worked all of that weight off by eating real food (not Chartwells) and falling asleep at decent times. But are you worried about keeping that weight off and staying in shape? Again, you’re not alone!

iPhone users can now be comforted by the “MyFitnessPal” app which tracks your calorie intake, weight progres, and more. To begin, you just have to enter a few numbers such as you height, age and weight. But for the app to be effective, you can’t lie about your weight! (Don’t worry, no one can see your results besides you). After that, your app will tell you how many calories you should be taking in every day.
If you want to be able to have a higher daily calorie goal, then simply do some cardio exercises at the gym and record how many calories you burned. By doing so, you’ll be giving yourself more room for meals during the day.
So why does this work? Because it’s simple and easy. While running from class to work or errands, you can simply type in what you’ve eaten, or the amount of calories you ate if you have that information. During the day, you can keep track of how many calories you have left, so you can decide if you should really get that caramel frappuccino or not. If you don’t already keep track of your meals, I highly suggest you download this app and start monitoring yourself. Even if you’re not scared of gaining weight (lucky you), this app is just a reminder of how to stay healthy through out the day. I’m sure you play around on your phone during class, so why not do something productive and good for your body?
