It may be fall in New England, but it is definitely spring in London. Spring 2013 styles are blooming on the runways in London during London fashion week. In the past, London Fashion Week has paled in comparison to the glitzy and glamorous shows of the preceding New York Fashion Week. Over the past few seasons, London has emerged as the funky younger sister of the fashion weeks. This Spring 2013 season was no different. Here are some the top trends from across the pond.
Trompe l’oeil Transparent
Sheer and transparent fabrics have always been a fixture during spring shows of fashion week. This season designers like Unique and Peter Pilotto played with sheers in a new way. The modern trompe l’oeil (“trick the eye” in French) dresses at Unique were artfully crafted from a combination of sheer silks and opaque geometric configurations. Peter Pilotto’s designs were sweet and whimsical. Carefully placed bows and embellishments kept his sheer designs sweet but still sexy.
Flora and Fauna
Every spring season, designers try to reinvent the floral trend. This season in London, designers went back to nature. Issa London was bursting with big colorful prints of animals, plants, and fruits very reminiscent of the tropics. Lush leaves and brightly colored birds created outfits that were like walking portraits of jungle scenes. The models at Moschino Cheap and Chic paraded down the runway in a different form of floral. Earthy tribal prints were modernized with the addition of geometric pineapples and sporty sneakers.
I Love the 90’s
You may have thought it would never happen, but the nineties are back in style. Mesh and acid wash accents were all over the London runways. You could also see influences from the grunge, rave, and even hip-hop cultures. This was especially seen at Ashish with the risky business style shirt juxtaposed with a sexy mesh skirt.
Cut-Out
Another major trend this season was cut-outs. They came in every shape and form and location. Tata Naka dove right into the trend with cut-out dresses that featured peek-a-boo necklines and waistlines. Cut-outs were also seen in accessories. Jonathan Saunders’ models strutted in cut-out sandals that stole the show.
