So we know what you’re thinking- sorority girls are all the same. All four sororities-Zeta Phi Beta, Sigma Sigma Sigma, Alpha Omicron Pi, and Delta Zeta- have something different to offer and so do the sisters. But sometimes our good points are overshadowed by a prejudice toward Greek Life which is based off a few bad examples blown  up in today’s media. Her Campus would like to clarify  these stereotypes:

Stereotype #1: Sororities are for girls who pay for their friends.

False! Here at Bryant University, formal recruitment doesn’t begin until spring semester, which allows freshman to get to know the girls before making a commitment to join. It’s true that we have dues, but this goes toward budgets for activities, events, and philanthropies. You don’t have to be rich to join a sorority; dues at Bryant are relatively affordable compared to many other schools.

Stereotype #2: Greeks don’t care about their schoolwork.

Not true! There is actually a minimum of a 2.5 GPA to join Greek life at Bryant. Each sorority strives to have the highest GPA and there is even an award given to the sister with the best grades. Talk about an incentive! It’s not uncommon to see members of Greek life together in the library encouraging each other to study hard and maintain the academic excellence their sorority expects of them.

Stereotype #3: All sorority girls do is party.

Against popular belief, we do a lot more than drinking on the weekends. In fact, each sorority on campus has their own national philanthropy and put on events year round to raise money. Not only do we support our own, but we also get involved in other charities. Outside of Greek Life, sorority girls are involved in all aspects of campus life from Student Senate to Velocity, and WJMF Radio to Her Campus!

Stereotype #4: You’re only accepted if you’re pretty.

So incorrect- looks don’t mean anything when it comes to friendship. Sororities are about friendship and sisterhood, you don’t want a girl in your sorority who’s rude and catty would you? Sisters represent the whole sorority and must be responsible, respectful and there for each other at all times; being pretty has nothing to do with that. Friendship – not beauty – is what keeps a sorority together.

In the end the choice is yours, but we hope this article gives you a different perspective on Greek Life at Bryant. Keep an eye out for upperclassman recruitment events in the fall and formal recruitment for all in the spring!
