Disclaimer: This is written for the college ladies who have NO knowledge of Football. I understand that there are girls, like myself, who love watching the game.
To some of us, Friday is the best day of the week. It signals the tumultuous end of classes, and the beginning of a brief relaxation period. However, we as females forget that Friday lacks the traditional American sport that brings men to television screens every week. Most guys would argue that Saturday, not Friday, should be the most celebrated day, because Saturday is Football Saturday. How as girls are we supposed to deal with the cultish behavior that surrounds this? How do we deal with the foreign language of running backs, touchdowns and safeties? I have some thoughts on this subject if caught in a room full of guys glued to the television.
First off, if you don’t understand what’s going on, DON’T ASK DURING THE GAME. Boys are very invested in football, and probably don’t enjoy explaining every single penalty, play, or position during a third down pass. You may notice some irritation from your guy if you keep pestering him with questions. Wait until after the game, or during a commercial break. Many guys find it attractive for a girl to understand aspects of the game.
Then we get to Fantasy Football. Yes, boys have fantasies too. Instead of involving marrying British royalty or dating Ryan Gosling, they have fantasy football. Guys arrange into groups, at home or at school, and have a “fake draft,” to create their own football teams with actual players, offences, and defenses. Each weekend, their team will rake in points depending on how well the players on their teams do. Therefore, the actual events of a game determine how many points are won. Since a decent amount of people bet money, tensions can run HIGH.
What if my boyfriend spends EVERY Saturday holed up in his room in front of the big SEC rivalry of the week? Unfortunately, this happens to the best of us. My advice would be to give your guy some time to enjoy his passion for a bit. If Saturday is your typical date night, maybe get details of the kick-off time before you make your dinner reservation. After all, SportsCenter is your Bravo equivalent.
When Saturday rolls around next week, now you have a little insight on game day.
