The Best Nerdy Halloween Costumes For 2012

Remember when being a nerd was a bad thing? Though movies and television shows will always lure us into thinking that nerds are America’s social outcasts, it’s bad if you’re not a little bit nerdy. So why not unleash your inner geek this Halloween? With these options, it’ll be hard to resist!

Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones
Whoever said that nerdy isn’t sexy never watched Game of Thrones. Be the envy of the Halloween bash by dressing up as the show’s blonde bombshell. In the ever-so-rare event you don’t want to purchase a medieval costume at the party store, give this character’s look a modern twist with a cropped top and baggy pants. Score her seductive waves by keeping your hair in braids up until you leave for the party. Give this costume a nerdy punch by sporadically saying, “winter is coming” – Game of Thrones fanatics, you know what I’m talking about.

Amelia Earhart
Not only is this aviatrix one of the most noteworthy women in history, but also copying her aviator-chic outfit for Halloween is pain-free. Pair your skinny jeans with your leather jacket (you always find an excuse to wear it, not like you need one), and a white scarf. If you don’t want to buy the helmet at your local party store, a pair of aviators will do. Finish this ensemble off with loose curls and your combat boots. If you’re looking to impress that cutie from your American History class, this is sure to do the trick!

Web Browser
Google Chrome, Safari, Internet Explorer – where would we be without you? With a simple ensemble- such as a black tee and skinny jeans- and a couple of fantastic accessories, you can give your favorite web browser a shout out. Head to a bash as Opera with a theatrical mask or dramatic makeup. Or channel your inner Mozilla Firefox with a cute pair of fox ears. Make your costume a little more obvious by attaching your desired browser’s logo onto your shirt. The best thing about this idea is that you can rock it alone or grab a group of friends to dress up with you. Nerds unite!

Steve Jobs
Just because you’re a girl doesn’t mean you can’t pay homage to the late iGenius. Lucky for you, this ensemble is as easy as pairing a black turtleneck with your sneakers and a pair of skinny jeans. In the event you ditched your turtlenecks in the third grade – guilty as charaged – your local thrift store will have a ton to choose from! Finish off this costume with faux glasses, a slicked back ponytail, and an Apple I.D. tag. And just think: for one night, you can pretend that you invented the iPod.

Korra from The Legends of Korra
This past summer, dorks everywhere – my friends and myself included – gathered around and watched The Legends of Korra. So maybe it’s a show on Nickelodeon—nerds who loved Avatar: The Last Airbender adore it. If you’re secretly obsessed with this show as well, why not dress up as your favorite female Avatar? With a brown miniskirt, blue tank top, leggings, and a pair of Uggs, you will be Korra’s collegiette doppelganger. Just don’t forget to master the Korra hairdo – you know, that fierce triple ponytail. With this costume, all the other anime-obsessed boys at the party will be so smitten.

A Fruit Ninja
An iPhone is nothing without a slew of apps, particularly some painfully addicting games (a.k.a. Fruit Ninja). Channel your inner produce slayer with a long-sleeved black shirt and black skinny jeans. As for the beauty front, straighten your hair and don a black headband across your forehead. Differentiate yourself from all the other ninjas at the party by carrying some fruit or attaching a picture of a banana to your shirt. Those regular ninjas will be pretty jealous of your creativity!

An Element
As a self-proclaimed science dork, you probably know the periodic table of elements like you know frat row. A girl needs some balance in her life, right? Show off your chemistry skills this spooky season by dressing up as your favorite element. Luckily, this is a great outfit idea for a collegiette who’s on a budget. Heading out as gold is as simple as donning a gold mini dress and tons of your favorite gilded eyeliner. You can also take this opportunity to get creative – wear your super chic one-piece and a sarong to channel hydrogen. For a finishing touch, attach a sign with all the element’s information. Before you go out, make sure you wrote the atomic weight down correctly—how embarrassing would it be to bump into your lab partner and have her correct your mistake?

Anna Wintour
As you must know by now, nerds come in all shapes, sizes, and specializations. While we tend to attribute all dorkiness to the academically accelerated, we cannot forget my personal favorite type of nerd: the fashion nerd. This breed may sport spectacular ensembles, but don’t be fooled—they are just, if not more, nerdy than you. If you wear your style savant status with pride, take this season to honor the queen. I mean Anna Wintour, obviously. While a Chanel skirt suit would be ideal, you can also pair your fitted pencil skirt with the outrageous faux fur jacket you got at that obscure thrift store. Go the extra mile and pick up an inexpensive bobbed wig. If not, make sure your hair is stick straight. Just remember to throw on your largest shades and chicest poker face before you leave the dorm!
