Fall is finally here.  Starbucks is advertising pumpkin spice lattes, people are buzzing about going apple picking, the air is crisp, and the leaves are changing— autumn in New England is like nowhere else. Collegiettes, it’s time to break out your sweaters, pants and boots;  the cool weather is quickly descending, and I have some tips on how to transition your wardrobe from skimpy summer to fab fall.

My favorite part of fall has to be the fashion.  Being a Florida girl, I grew up in tank tops, shorts, and flip-flops.  Experiencing a legitimate change in seasons opened the door for me to actually wear the styles that I so envied.  For this fall, there are definitely some trends that have distinguished themselves from the crowd.

The Statement Coat.

For those nights you decide to go into Boston, this is a great piece to put over a casual dress or a pair of cropped pants and a sweater (this can be a pea coat, but it doesn’t have to be!).  Don’t be afraid to pick a bright color.  Just because we are heading towards winter doesn’t mean you need to put your spring colors into hibernation.

The Jean Jacket.

Carry over that perfect summer jean jacket to be a staple of your fall wardrobe.  Match it with your favorite pair of brown boots and patterned infinity scarf and you are fall-ready!

The Chunky Sweater.

As such a versatile piece, it is perfect for autumn.  You can wear it by itself or with a t-shirt or button-down underneath, with a pair of casual jeans, or leggings and patterned flats to dress it up a bit.  Add a statement necklace, and you are set for a sunny fall day.

The Leather Jacket.

You may be saying to yourself, “Why is this girl obsessed with jackets?”  Well, the answer is because they are an essential and completely functional piece in anyone’s fashion repertoire.  The leather jacket provides edginess to any outfit, and it can be dressed up or down, making it perfect for almost any occasion.

The Skirt.

Mini or long, this trend proves itself to be extremely accessible and practical in fall weather.  Add a pair of tights and heels for a night out, or keep the outfit casual with a pair of boots, and you are sure to be the picture of fall.

Most importantly, layer, layer, layer!  Although everyone and their mother tried to push me in the direction of layering when picking out my clothes to come to BC, I didn’t fully grasp it.  I can’t even begin to emphasize this point enough; layering is key to surviving fall in Boston.  On the warmer days, don’t be afraid to wear that summer top you love with a cardigan, jacket and scarf.  Trust me, it will make your life better when you arrive at your one hundred and two degree classroom.

I am a Political Science major and Women's and Gender Studies minor at Boston College. I am an RA on campus and am involved in the Student Admissions Program. Since I am from Florida, I can legitimately say that I love long walks on the beach. I also love getting lost in a world fabricated by a novel, there is honestly nothing better.
