A Dash of Sass: Smart Snacking

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Conn Coll chapter.

Because Harris isn’t open late into the evening, and sometimes pizza from Oasis seems a little too heavy, it is a smart idea to keep some of these food staples in your room. My piece of advice is to buy simple foods that stay fresh for a while and can be prepared in numerous combinations. If you are buying fresh fruit like grapes or berries, buy small amounts because fruit is expensive and you’ll hate to see it spoil. Buy fruit with a friend, split the cost, and you’ll each have your own stash. And when you are in the grocery store and see that one snack that you love, whether it be Cheez-Its or Pepperidge Farm cookies, add it to your basket and know that you will be able to treat yourself!

Oasis doesn’t only offer french fries, pizza, and breakfast sandwiches- there are items that are always good to have on hand. There are small bottles of milk if you make coffee or tea in your room. There are also scones, muffins, cereal, and greek yogurt. Because these come in single portion sizes, you will be able to keep these snacks fresh for the next morning when you are running a little late!

String Cheese pairs great with crackers, but it is even better melted on tortilla chips. If you like spicy nachos, try a jalapeno or pepper jack flavor! I also keep a jar of salsa in my fridge- it lasts a while and is perfect for dipping.

The number one food for my room is peanut butter. It is great for adding extra protein to a granola bar, or for smearing on a rice cake with banana. One of my favorite snacks is popcorn with peanut butter and Nutella. When the popcorn is fresh and hot out of the microwave, add a spoonful of peanut butter and Nutella and it will melt perfectly.

Popcorn is a lot lighter than potato chips, therefore you can help yourself to a little more, and it isn’t so bad to eat late at night. If the microwave bag serves more than you can eat, save the rest and add nuts, dried berries and chocolate chips for your very own trail mix.
