DIY Costumes + Halloween Manicures!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Skidmore chapter.

Halloween is days away, and if you haven’t already, it’s time to start planning. With multiple nights of festivities, costume planning can take a lot of thought–and cash. Luckily, with these DIY costumes, you can save money and show off your CTM skills.

Woodland Fairy

This easy, cute costume is perfect for nature lovers, and can even incorporate some real pieces of nature! Collect leaves, flowers, or vines from Northwoods (a great excuse for a hike) or pick up some faux foliage at the nearest craft store. You can weave these materials into crowns and bracelets, or attach them to your outfit. A pair of wings (found at a costume store, or make them yourself) completes the costume.

Mad Scientist
Find a friend that takes Chemistry, and your costume is 90 percent complete! All you need is that borrowed lab coat, the dorkiest pair of glasses that you can acquire, and some hair spray/temporary dye if you want to go all out.

Sexy Librarian
You can find everything you need for this costume in your closet: a high-waisted skirt, glasses, fishnet tights, and some simple heels make up the basic costume. Pull your hair into a tight bun, carry around some sexy titles (perhaps 50 shades of grey?) and don’t forget to wear a nametag with a sexy slogan (library name, your name, “Helping you find exactly what you desire!”).

The Ultimate Hipster

At Skidmore, collecting hipster items shouldn’t be a challenge. Ask your friends, or delve into your own wardrobe, and you will be decked out in no time! Staples for this costume include: skinny jeans, oversized glasses, a funky hairstyle, a mason jar, and some grungy sneakers or studded boots. You can definitely take multiple angles here—just be sure to act the part (think IRONY).

Group Costume: A Game of Pong!
This quirky costume idea requires a couple of friends. Also, it will take some planning ahead, because you need to buy garbage cans and spray paint them red. Next, cut holes for legs and staple on suspenders. Select one friend to dress head-to-toe in white—as long as you all stick together, it will be clear that she is the ball!

Don’t forget fun DIY Halloween Manicures!

Painting your nails provides a relaxing break from midterm stress. If you want to make extend that procrastination and have a little bit of festive fun, this DIY Halloween manicure is the perfect for you!

You will need:

  • Some Halloween colors
  • Nail art pens to create your designs (easy alternative: a sharpie marker)
  • Tons of nail polish remover for mess-ups and re-dos!
  • Patience and creativity

  1. Start with a clean solid base coat. Make sure that it completely dries before you start adding designs.
  2. In the meantime, plan ahead! Practice doodles with your nail art pens, and make a plan for each nail.
  3. Carefully, start painting on those designs. Watch out for blobs of nail paint! You will need to go slowly and wipe the brush often to keep your designs neat.
  4. Finish up with a topcoat of sparkles to seal in your designs and add some glitz!

With these festive nails, you’ll be sure to stay in the spirit of Halloween throughout the spooky season. Just make sure that you color coordinate with your costume. It’s never too early to plan for your Halloween debut!
