He says he’s single, his Facebook status says single, he hits on other girls but don’t let him fool you: he has a girlfriend.  Yes, they did “break-up” to go to college but really he texts her everyday, talks about her constantly when he’s drinking, and visits her as much as possible.  Boys with girlfriends, or newly ex girlfriends, are very common freshmen year.  They’re trying so hard to hold on to the past that they miss things in the present, like you: the girl pinning for the boy with a girlfriend back home.  You’re thinking about him while he’s thinking about her. He’s like the untouchable possession because you don’t want to be the girl who throws herself at him when he’s not ready but you’re patience is running out.  Here are some tips on to how to deal with boys like this:

1.If they’re broken up but he still talks about/to her…

Be his friend.  He’s obviously not over her yet so don’t try to swoop in and grab him.  Listen and offer advice without putting any moves on him.

2.If he doesn’t mention her but you are aware of her…

Don’t pretend you don’t know.  If he is choosing not to tell you about her and seems interested in you, then he’s probably not the stand up guy you think he is.

3.If he is completely committed to her…

Don’t wait for them to break up.  It’s not worth the time and effort for you to wait.  Move on and find someone better.

4.If he is single and there’s no sign of a current or newly ex girlfriend…

Grab him! These guys are rare so take them while you can.

Don’t lose hope.  There are plenty of single boys with no girls at home, too.  Basically if there is a girl at home, whether she’s a current girlfriend or an ex, stay away.  It’s not worth it.  However if he really does seem worth it, then wait until he is completely over her to try to be more than friends with him.  Just remember the Meiko song, “Boys with Girlfriends,” and tell yourself “you know better than that.”
