One of the downfalls of college is how overwhelmingly expensive college life can be. It’s frustrating when you can’t afford to buy or do anything because of your budget. Although it seems hard, there are some easy ways to save money while you’re in college.Â
- Check out books from the library instead of buying them for class.
- Buy textbooks used and shop around for the cheapest places, especially online. Amazon.com and Half.com are two websites that have cheap, used textbooks.
- Sell your textbooks. You’ll usually get more money by selling them online or to another student than through the campus bookstore.
- Buy groceries on sale and use coupons.
- Buy groceries in bulk and store brand products.
- Try not to eat out, but if you do, use coupons or discounts.
- Make your own coffee instead of buying it.
- Take the bus, walk or bike to save on gas and parking expenses.
- Reduce your electricity bill by turning off lights when you’re not in the room and unplugging appliances when you’re not using them.
- Use the internet on campus, libraries, coffee shops and other places that have free WiFi, instead of paying for it.
- Watch TV shows and movies online instead of paying for cable.
- Buy clothes at consignment shops or thrift stores.
- Pay your bills on time so you can avoid late fees.
- Utilize student discounts.
Be aware of how much money you have to spend and what you’re spending it on. Always pay your bills first and then buy things you need, such as food, toilet paper. Then you can figure out how much you can spend on things you want. Also, keep in mind that although it doesn’t seem like it, eating out, frequenting coffee shops and going out to the bars can add up fast.Â
