We all know it’s coming…winter on the hill. Except can we call it that? “Winter”
implies fluffy snow and hot chocolate and cuddling by fireside—Denison really just
has “rainy season.” Slush, sleet, high winds…how do you dress for weather like that?
How do you show up to class looking dry and cute instead of like a drowned rat? I
have a few suggestions:
1. Scarves and gloves: essentials to ward off the biting wind we get on the hill,
these can be cute and functional. Chunky knit scarves, fun prints, and warm
infinity scarves are all must-haves for a collegiette’s wardrobe. Any coat or
outfit looks instantly upgraded just by adding a couple accessories, even if
it’s one of those dress-for-class-in-five-minutes days (I know we’ve all had
them).
2. Boots: Look around, if it’s too cold for Sperry’s or Tory Burch flats (well done,
Denison girls), everyone pulls out the boots. I suggest two basic pairs: one
for wet and one for dry weather. Uggs won’t cut it in the sleet and snow,
and your feet will end up cold and wet for the whole day. L. L. Bean sells the
classic winter boots that go with jeans, tights, dresses, leggings, ANYTHING.
There are lots of other companies that sell similar ones, and your feet will
stay dry and cozy all day long, no matter how gross the weather. For the
drier weather, this season calls for the classic riding boots that make any
outfit look classy and chic without even trying. As much as we all love
sporting the best designers, I suggest checking out the Target selection, as
they have awesome deals and great styles!
3. Hats: I know some of you are like me—if I wear a hat for 5 minutes, for the
next 2 hours I have super-fabulous hat-head and it’s disgusting. BUT I know
some of you have more resilient hair and could pull off a cute hat. Whether
you like beanies, baseball caps, or knit winter hats (with the little ear flaps),
they’re warm, cute, and can hide a bad hair day or protect you from crazy
winds and snowstorms. Also, I hear boys think they’re cute! Bonus.
4. Tights: This style has grown on me; to be honest, I was never a tights person
until recently. I have seen so many girls rocking fun patterned tights with
boots and knit dresses. Tights come in any color or thickness, but they’re
classier and a little nicer than leggings, and can be paired with any kind of
boots. Pair a simple skirt with fun leggings, your favorite boots, and a cozy
sweater and you are set for class in just a few minutes
5. Sweaters: I cannot stress how much I love sweaters. You should see my
closet, there are stacks of them, it’s sad. Sweaters are not only functional,
but come in LITERALLY every size, style, and material—there is no way you
won’t find one you love. Sweaters make any outfit warmer and more stylish,
and they’re a great base layer. Pull on that old sweater you stole from your
dad, brother, or boyfriend, throw on a fun scarf, some jeans and boots and
you are good to go!
Winter is all about fun layers; so don’t be afraid to experiment! Mix your striped
sweater with a floral scarf, or patterned tights with an oversize cozy sweater and
skirt, chunky socks with your favorite snow boots, and there’s no way you’ll go
wrong! Don’t forget umbrellas or hoods to cover your head, and when you get to
class you’ll be warm and dry, ready to de-layer and still look super cute underneath!
Check out stores like J. Crew, Urban Outfitters, Target, Nordstrom, and of course
discount sites like Gilt and Rue La La! There are awesome deals everywhere! Good
luck and happy dressing!
