Israeli-Palestinian Turmoil

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at George Mason University chapter.

Throughout the past few months, we’ve been pounded by media coverage on issues ranging all across the news spectrum. From bombarding us with election coverage, followed by the Petraeus scandal we are now, yet again, revisiting one of history’s most brutal conflicts – the Israeli–Palestinian conflict.

Probably one of the most prominent and recurring struggles of our lifetime, we’ve seen sporadic coverage of this conflict throughout the years as we watch reporters fill us in on death tolls and air strikes from the Gaza Strip, Jerusalem and the West Bank.

The facts are there and opinions are flaring up on both sides of the argument with an end nowhere in sight. Palestinian protestors were seen by North Plaza last Thursday with signs quoting Gazan victims of the attacks. Still, other Israeli students have taken their stand in advocating peace and justice via social networking sites. With both nations once again suffering from recent outbreaks, the agonizing Israeli-Palestinian conflict is back, in full swing.

Each side has its own narrative and it’s rather hard to find an unbiased article or blog that simply gives you the facts. With stories of victimhood, self-defense and injustice, victims of this war have been ravaged and some have been forced to flee. With over 7,000 deaths since the year 2000, this conflict is one which is taking lives by the masses and continues to do so.

With air strikes and missiles still in play, it’s hard to determine what the future holds for these two nations. Both Israel and Palestine, nonetheless, want safety and security for their citizens, however, the hostile environment this massive war has produced will be a constant threat to all.
