What made you choose VCU?
I wanted to go to a Virginia school because I didn’t want to go out-of-state and my parents told me they would pay for in-state so I didn’t want to have a lot of debt after college. And then out of the in-state schools, VCU appealed to me the most because Richmond has a really cool music scene.
Where is your favorite place to go in Richmond?
I like to go to my room, I like to go to my friend Ryan Hoss’ house, and I like going to Johnny Cave.
What is your favorite movie?
Whitest Kids You Know
What is your dream girl like?
Very pretty, she’s smart, and she’s not annoying.
What’s your biggest fear?
When I’m in a really dark room all by myself and it’s creepy, I’m always afraid a witch is going to come out and scare me. It’s psychological. I’m not scared of the dark; I’m scared of images in my mind. It’s more of an irrational fear. It’s like when you’re stressed out and you only focus on one thing – in my mind I have tunnel vision and I only see one thing and my heart starts racing. It happened a lot when I was a kid.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I would go visit my cousin in New York. I’d also like to live in Baltimore for a while because the music scene there is really cool and you can find really cheap places there to rent. You don’t have to work very hard to pay your rent; you can just do a lot of music stuff.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like to go to Ipanema’s and there’s this great deal – you can sit outside and they’ll refill your coffee for $2 plus tip. I also like to play music. I might be playing a show at Strange Matter soon. I play piano and sing and do lots of reverb while my friend plays complicated beats over it. It’s very simple ambient.
What’s a fun fact about you?
I write for “The Horn RVA,” which is VCU’s local music publication. I focus primarily on house shows and the types of bands that play there. I’m a beat reporter, which is like a certain thing you cover. My “beats” are Bauhaus and all the people associated with that and Subterranea Collective. My favorite band in Richmond is “Way, Shape, or Form.” Also, one time I had a fan blog called “ihatebenfoster.tumblr.com” and it was made by these two girls I’m friends with. It was such a funny blog, but then they deleted it. I’m also in a film with Will Bollinger (a former campus cutie) and we’re going around Hollywood Cemetery looking for a grave, but we never find it. That’s the point of the movie, it’s really absurd.
