The holiday season is my personal favorite time of year. I love the snow, the smells, the fires (in fireplaces…), and being with family. I also love the holidays because of THE MOVIES! While I have a hard time picking my absolute favorite (there are 72 on Netflix alone, and they’re all ABC Family movies…), I would have to say that How The Grinch Stole Christmas (animated version not Taylor Momsen pre-Goth version) and The Holiday (um. Who doesn’t love Jude Law being all emotional about Cameron Diaz). BUT, I went around and asked some fellow students what their favorite holiday movies are, and why:

Sara Hofmann, Sophomore

I love the claymation movies, like “Frosty The Snowman” and “Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer” because my family and I have watched them on every Christmas that I can remember. I also LOVE ‘Miracle on 34th Street’”

Eliza Evarts, Freshman

“I love “National Lampoons Christmas Movie” because it is so hilarious”

Barrie Froehlich, Sophomore

“The ‘Home Alone’ trilogy is my favorite set of holiday movies (even though the third has a different boy)! They are a big family favorite at my house. Every year my mom, dad, brother, sister, and I never fail to get a good chuckle out of them! It makes it seem like getting left alone in The Big Apple wouldn’t be so bad!”

Jocelyn Festle (on right), Junior

‘White Christmas’ for sure.. It’s such a classic Christmas love story and the Bing Crosby is awesome. My family watches it every year, and my sister and I used to reenact the “Sisters, Sisters” dance.”

Claire Challenger, sophomore

“‘Love Actually’, i think it not only is really romantic and interesting, but i think the message it conveys, “love actually is all around” is inspiring and uplifting and really brings out the spirit of Christmas.

Charley Treacy, sophomore

A Christmas Story, because I watch it with my sister every Christmas eve!”

Holly Wilson, Senior

“My favorite Christmas movie is “Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town” The story of how Santa came to be is too cute. I love the old timey feeling that the stop motion filming gives it. It always puts me in the Christmas spirit and I will give anyone who can say “burgermeister meisterburger” without smiling $1.”

We see from these students’ favorites, that many holiday favorites originate from traditions we have with our families during the Holidays. What is your favorite holiday movie? What is your favorite holiday tradition?

Kaitlin is a sophomore at Denison University in Granville, Ohio. She is currently studying Economics with a minor in Communication. When Kaitlin isn't studying, you can find her attending events for her sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta, writing articles, playing tennis, or watching Bravo obsessively.  As a Bravo fangirl, she would love to meet Andy Cohen.
