The World in 2013: Movies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Chicago chapter.

The best of 2013: Bringing out your inner kid

2013 will allow us to indulge our inner kid with the release of two highly-anticipated animated films, Pixar’s Monsters University and Universal’s Despicable Me 2 (yay for minions!). It’s true that “kid” movies are typically not the most intellectually stimulating but after a week of brutal UChicago courses, sometimes mindlessly giggling alongside a group of toddlers while popping Sour Patch Kids in our mouths is what we need.

Our childhood stories are also getting a makeover. The Wizard of Oz is getting animated in Dorothy of OZ for the children and Glee-fan audience (Lea Michele will be voicing and singing the role of Dorothy) while Disney will be transforming the classic tale with Oz the Great and Powerful, which tells the history of Oz with some gorgeous, and rather trippy, visuals. Also, excuse the tangent to the purely superficial, but can we talk about how ridiculously attractive this cast is? James Franco, Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz, and Mila Kunis. Good god, let’s all watch the movie just to stare at them for two hours.

The story of Hansel & Gretel is also getting an extra gritty twist with Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters starring Jeremy Renner (who can do no wrong) and a beautiful, bad ass Gemma Arterton. Judging by the trailer, which features witches that look like Lord of the Rings orcs and ten forms of artillery, this movie is most definitely not for kids, unless of course your goal is to permanently traumatize them. However, this movie looks like it will be absolutely perfect for those who enjoy their share of violent catharsis and fantasy.

Could go either way: Zombie Movies

2013 will bring several zombie movies including the dramatic World War Z with Brad Pitt as well as rom-com Warm Bodies. Although neither of these movies look particularly bad, zombie movies tend to feature repetitive themes and/or storylines. And while we may absolutely adore Nicholas Hoult from our days of Skins marathons, we may already know the entire plot for Warm Bodies after watching the trailer. Spoiler alert: he turns into a human; the boy gets the girl. Do we need to go ahead and spend the $15 to watch it in theaters? Eh, who knows? We’re pretty content with our zombie repertoire of Zombieland, 28 Days Later, and Shaun of the Dead.

We really couldn’t care:

Hangover Part III. Why are they dragging this series on? While we appreciate all the actors as individuals, we’re so tired of the wolf pack. Let the glory and hilarity that was the first Hangover rest in peace.

Also, Kim Kardashian in Tyler Perry’s Confessions of a Marriage Counselor. Yeah.
