New Year, New Fashion Trends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

It’s the beginning of the new year, and the majority of you, including myself, go through your closet and fight about what you’re going to throw away, keep or donate. Honestly, get rid of everything, because there is a whole new line of trends waiting to take up more space in your closet. Don’t worry, those hangers won’t be bare for long. Here are some of the 2013 trends to look out for.

1. Camo Print: Some of you are probably thinking, “You have got to be kidding me.” But I’m not. Camouflage is back, but this print is not going to make you unnoticed when you wear it. You can wear a camo button down with a pair of black skinnies and some combat boots and you’re ready to go out. This print is being worn everywhere from shirts to even pants, but not like the cargos that you used to wear when you were a kid.

2. Black and White: Say goodbye to pretty pastel purples in spring, and say hello to the everyday black and white. Black and white is known as boring, sophisticated and as “night time” apparel, but this year black and white prints will be flooding the streets during the day. This is about going back to basics and being very minimalistic. These classic colors are very wearable together and would be great to create a day-to-night outfit.

3. Playing Peek-A-Boo: It’s ok to show a little skin nowadays, and here in sunny Orlando this is going to be huge. We already got a little sneak peek at this trend last year and saw many celebrities pull it off such as Kristen Stewart, Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez. Last year, it was about showing everyone a little bit of the midriff with a crop top and a skirt, but in 2013 we are not sticking to the midriff. The peek-a-boo cut is expanding and go to razor blade slashes on the arms, deep cutouts that showcase the middle of your chest with a piece of mesh and side cutouts. I have a feeling this is going to be a big one.

4. Body Hardware: Hello, harnesses and corsets. Studs and spikes definitely left their mark in 2012. Those two are still here, but this year there is going to be a lot more structure and a lot more body hardware. Leather harnesses and corsets are being attached to tops and dresses to give a very classic and edgy look. This is a great way to add a little sex appeal in your wardrobe if your new fashion resolution was to be a bit sexier. Chains and metal are also being implemented into outfits.

5. Sneakers: Girls are now saying bye to their studded 5-inch booties and saying hello to the tennis shoe. Not Nike or Adidas, but more on the lines of Steve Madden and Unif. Adding a pair of sneakers to a pair of leggings and oversized shirt will give you a chic and comfortable look. If you still want those extra 5-inches, there is a sneaker for that, too. The wedge sneaker has come in full effect and will get you that fabulous height with amazing comfort!
