So You’re Signed up for Recruitment?
If you’re like the majority of us, you signed up for recruitment online before break, and just realized that recruitment is starting THIS WEEKEND. Are you nervous? Probably. Excited? Definitely. Obsessing over outfits? Of Course. So, here are a few questions and answers that you may need responses to.
Did I do the right thing by signing up? I’m really nervous.
Yes! Going through recruitment is a great opportunity to meet new faces on campus, and have the chance to get involved with a new organization. In each house, you suddenly have tons of sisters who you will become close with, and will always have your back. If you’re struggling with finding close friends now, or are dying to meet new people, you’re in for a treat. Joining a sorority also leads to impressive leadership positions inside and outside of the house. Great resume builders! Even better, each house has their own philanthropy, and will hold service events to raise funds for their individual charities. Who doesn’t love giving back to our community?
Who/what are Rho Gammas?
Everyone participating in the recruitment process will be divided up into small groups, and you will be assigned around three women on the PanHellenic Council, or Rho Gammas. They are amazing women who will lead you through the recruitment process, and to each house during rounds. Ask them any questions you can think of, because they are here to help you!
What do I talk about during rounds?
This is the part that can seem scary, trying to come up with interesting conversation topics with someone you’ve never met before. Just remember, this is a time to show your stuff! Definitely discuss where you’re from, pre-orientations, what you did over winter break, pets, siblings, leadership roles you have, sports you play, what you’re involved with on campus, where you live etc. DO NOT bring up boys, hook-ups, ANYTHING alcohol related, political/religious views and parties. Also ask questions about each house and their philanthropies too! Remember that you are trying to find the group of women that is best for you.
WHAT do I wear?
First Round: This is more casual compared to the other two rounds, so you don’t have to be too dressy, but still look nice and put together. This is what we recommend.
1. Jeans. (Don’t wear leggings, or pants that look like them)
2. Leather boots. (It’s going to be FREEZING outside, so cover your ankles! And they always look nice)
3. Accessories. This is super important! Dressing up your outfit with a cute scarf, or jewelry that accents your style can be a great conversation piece.
4. Your recruitment t-shirt.
5. If you get cold easily, bring a cardigan to wear over it.
6. IMPORTANT: If you are one of those people, like the majority of us, who play with your hair when you get nervous, pull your hair half-back, or put it in a low pony. You don’t want to be putting your hair behind your ears every few seconds while your in a conversation at one of the houses.
Second Round: Business Casual. This is the trickiest round for dressing up. You definitely don’t want to look too fancy, but much nicer than jeans. I would recommend some sort of skirt with tights and high leather boots with a nice sweater or top. Wear interview attire. DO NOT wear anything super tight. Leave your going out dresses/skirts at home!
Final Round: This one is where you break out your dress. Pick a more conservative, knee length dress to wear that night. Try not to wear black, because some of the houses all wear that color. Leave your tight, clubbing, going out clothes at home. Don’t wear a super tight dress, try to find something with a little more flow. If you want to wear heels, and are worried about the walk, don’t worry! Bring a pair of Uggs or warm shoes to wear while you walk to each house. You will have time to switch your Uggs to your heels before you enter each house.
OTHER IMPORTANT THINGS:
1. DO NOT drink/go out during the dry week, which beings at 12 noon on Saturday the 19th, and ends on Tuesday the 29th. This is extremely important, because it is a PanHellenic rule, and you want to give the best impression of yourself during rounds. You want to be respectful towards this rule and the houses. We can’t emphasize this enough. Do something fun with your friends, like watch a movie or go into Granville.
2. Get ahead on your work. You will have very little time to do work the weekend of final rounds and bid day. Get ahead on your readings, or start that paper due next week.
Hopefully after reading this, you will be more at ease. Good luck with recruitment, ladies, and have a blast!
