New Biddies, Bid Adieu to Sorority Questions

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Penn chapter.

With rush season behind us, the next difficult part of the process begins: determining what to do now that you’re actually in a sorority! Luckily, we’ve put together our top pieces of advice for new sorority members.

Go in with an open mind
As a new member, you’re going to have the pleasure of meeting a brand new group of girls. It’s not at all uncommon for your best friends to end up in many different sororities, so don’t be upset if your best friend didn’t join the same sorority that you did. With a freshmen class of over 2,000 students, you’re bound to find many girls that you had never met before. Luckily, your new sisters most likely share similar interests and values with you. The more time you spend with the girls, the more similar you’ll realize you actually are. Although they may be strangers now, it won’t be long until you’re all heading downtown together and finishing each other’s sentences.

Go to events
During my freshmen year, I made the mistake of being a little too shy after I joined my sorority. While I did go to the majority of events, I avoided a couple since I thought, “It might be awkward because I don’t know everyone!” However, what I failed to see with my flawed logic was that everyone was in the same boat, and everyone wanted to get to know each other! Being a new sorority member can be both an exciting and nerve-racking time, and the best way to quickly fall in love with your sorority is to become an active member of it.

Stay classy
While your older sisters may quickly make you feel at home in your new sorority, make sure you keep your composure and stay classy. Although your sisters will greet you with open arms, first impressions are still vitally important. Now that you have been offered a bid at a sorority, you represent an entire group of women. Remember to act like the lady that you are!

Be excited!
As obvious as it may seem, be excited to join your new sisters. You were all chosen to be a part of an amazing group of women, and you have an incredible three years to look forward to. Not only will you meet a new group of admirable and respectable girls, but you will also form friendships and memories to last a lifetime!
