Makeup Your Mind: Tips & Tricks to Make Your Makeup Last!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

We’ve all been there-the long days, the long nights…as a University student with everything riding upon our shoulders! With everything going on, it is so easy to get caught up in the stress and imbalance of life that physical appearance gets lost within. To those who do enjoy indulging in makeup, it can sometimes be quite the feat to even get it to last the whole day. Whether it’s for a night out on the town or just for everyday, the woman-on-the-go reserves the right to stay looking fresh-faced, flawless and beautiful all day long.

#1 Face Primer

It is possible to work and toil the day away while having your makeup last for a majority of the day.  In order to make face makeup last longer, using a face primer is crucial. No matter what type of skin you may have, face primers help retain the foundation for longer-lasting wear. It also helps makes the skin smoother and maintains a layer between your skin and makeup so that the makeup doesn’t seep into skin as quickly. This results in fewer acne breakouts and skin irritation due to the indirect settling of the makeup on the skin!

Face primers are available in a variety of different textures. Tinted face primers help to add colour to the face. Highlighting face primers create a subtle glow and, when applied under foundation, add a healthy and youthful luminosity to the skin. A great, affordable primer is the Sephora Mattifying Face Primer which retails for about $18. The Revlon Photoready Perfecting Primer also has great lasting power and retails for $15.99. It is comparable to the Makeup Forever line of products and was listed as an Allure magazine’s pick for their “31 days of Beauty” series, which was featured in October of last year.

#2 Powder

Powder is another crucial step to making makeup stay on longer. Whether it is a pressed powder or mineral powder, the dry texture of the product absorbs excess oil and shine that may be left on the skin. It also provides coverage and helps smooth out the edges of your makeup for a flawless finish. A great, affordable loose powder is NYC’s Smooth Skin Loose Powder (C$3.15). This powder comes in two shades—Naturally Beige and Translucent—and helps absorb oil and shine for hours. A quick brush of this product goes a long way.

#3 Milk of Magnesium

In order to get makeup to last even longer, perhaps on special nights out, a product called Milk of Magnesium helps as well. This product helps to mattify the skin and absorbs excess oil. It helps your skin to stay shine-free much longer than usual. Not to be used on an everyday basis, this product creates the perfect canvas for makeup.

#4 Take care of your skin!

In addition to these tricks, taking care of the skin is also essential to achieving flawless coverage. Your skin is a base for this makeup and the smoother it is, the longer your makeup will last. Treat your skin like you would a paint canvas. In order for the liquid to go on, you require an unmarred base. Makeup will not stick onto skin that is dehydrated, so cleanse daily, exfoliate regularly and moisturize often.

The use of makeup to help skin look unblemished dates back for centuries. We are constantly on the go and must tackle the world’s challenges. Therefore, our appearance should be at the back of our minds and with these tricks, you’ll be sure to keep people guessing. Be radiant, be brave, be daring and above all, be beautiful!
